Revisit Eli Roth’s bloody fun Thanksgiving horror movie on Netflix
As a horror enthusiast with a penchant for the macabre and a soft spot for Thanksgiving-themed films, I must say that “Thanksgiving” (2023) is an absolute delight for those who appreciate a good dose of gore and gallows humor. Having grown up watching slasher classics like “Halloween” and “Friday the 13th”, I can confidently place “Thanksgiving” on that hallowed list.
Among the goriest and bloodiest Thanksgiving-themed movies was just released last year, and fortunately for those looking for a darkly humorous option to watch during the holiday season, it’s now available on Netflix! That’s right, the appropriately named movie “Thanksgiving,” directed by Eli Roth, hit theaters in November 2023. This year, why not kick off a new tradition by rewatching this slasher flick as we celebrate the holiday!
In the fictional trailer presented within the film Grindhouse (2007), Roth eventually seizes the opportunity to develop his grisly idea into a complete movie. Not only does Thanksgiving offer ample entertainment with traditional elements such as the centerpiece turkey, parades, and the like, but it also boasts one of the funniest and craziest Black Friday scenes ever depicted on the silver screen.
The movie doesn’t delay the thrills; instead, it starts by focusing on a shopping mall called RightMart in Plymouth, Massachusetts, gearing up for the busiest shopping day of the year – Thanksgiving. However, given that this is a horror film, particularly from the director of Hostel, things soon spiral out of control as people meet gruesome ends through killings, scalpings, and stampede incidents during the frenzy to enter and grab the best bargains.
A year later in my narrative, a murderer donning a mask reminiscent of John Carver begins targeting individuals linked to the RightMart incident. This chilling sequence hints that this individual may hold a grudge or seek revenge against those involved in that tragic event from the past.
Individuals who have previously seen “Grindhouse” and are conversant with Roth’s initial trailer will find numerous recognizable scenes, but this time around, he has a more substantial budget at his disposal, enabling him to bring his grisly concepts to life in a grander scale.
The follow-up film is presently being worked on. Earlier this year, Roth shared that he and his writing partner Jeff Rendell were preparing to hand over the script for the sequel to the studio, as reported by Variety. Furthermore, they mentioned that it’s probable that Addison Rae, a key character from the initial movie, will reappear in the sequel.
Additionally, joining Rae in the 2023 movie are actors such as Patrick Dempsey, Gina Gershon, Rick Hoffman, Nell Verlaque, Milo Manheim, and Jalen Thomas Brooks.
Since there aren’t many horror movies set during holidays, particularly Thanksgiving, it’s delightful to find a quality slasher film that we can enjoy annually in November. For those who prefer to possess the movie, it can be rented or bought digitally, or you could opt for a physical copy as well.
