Review: Star Trek—A Year to the Day That I Saw Myself Die—and Other Stories

As a lifelong Star Trek enthusiast with over three decades spent traversing the final frontier of interstellar fandom, I must say that the latest offering from Titan Magazines/CBS has left me thoroughly impressed – and slightly squinty-eyed! “Star Trek Explorer Presents Star Trek—A Year to the Day I Saw Myself Die—and Other Stories” is a testament to the enduring appeal of the franchise, showcasing the talents of esteemed authors such as Walter Koenig, David Mack, and Michael Collins.

The Star Trek Explorer Magazine is about to publish its last issue, leaving many fans eager for the captivating short stories it has become known for. However, Titan Magazines/CBS seems unwilling to halt the flow of quality fiction. This is suggested by their latest publication, “Star Trek Explorer Presents: Star Trek—A Year to the Day I Saw Myself Die—and Other Stories,” which indicates a continued commitment to delivering excellent fiction. We’ve been fortunate to have a wealth of such stories with collections like “Star Trek Explorer Presents: Star Trek ‘Q And False’ And Other Stories,” published in 2022, and “Star Trek Explorer Presents: Star Trek The Mission and Other Stories,” released in February this year.

This collection, which I was given a copy to review, includes original short fiction by Walter Koenig, David Mack, Michael Collins, and more. In hardcover, with color pictures, drawn images, and varying monochromed images that enhance each story, the 93-page book takes you through various series, including Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: The Original Series and more.

I have to admit that my one complaint with this book is the size of the font. It’s incredibly tiny, and I found it difficult to read even with 2.75 reading glasses. Even someone with 20/20 might have trouble reading this, unless you’re in a really bright room.

Besides having no drawbacks, this book is a must-buy, especially for Star Trek enthusiasts. The narratives in it are on par with what you would typically find in a Star Trek Explorer Magazine, penned by skilled authors. Among the standout stories for me were “Chekov’s Challenge” by Walter Koenig and Chris MCauley, “A Year to the Day I Saw Myself Die” by Michael Collins who was also the illustrator, and “Sundering” by David Mack. These tales left a lasting impression on me, and I can’t wait to read them again.

If you’re searching for an ideal present for a Star Trek enthusiast, this hardcover compilation is set to go on sale on December 10th. You can pre-order it at Amazon, Penguin Random House, and Barnes & Noble now, ensuring ample time for wrapping before placing it under the tree. With the final issue of Star Trek Explorer Magazine being printed in December, let’s hope that Titan Books/CBS will continue releasing such collections!
