REVIEW: “Shelter” (2026)

Jason Statham’s new action movie, “Shelter,” is a fun, light diversion from the more serious films often released this time of year. It doesn’t really offer anything new, but it’s exactly the kind of action movie Statham does well. Fans of his signature style will find it delivers everything they’re looking for.

As a critic, I’ve seen this setup before – a lot. Ric Roman Waugh, who’s worked well with Gerard Butler in the past (except for ‘Angel Has Fallen’), delivers another action thriller starring Jason Statham. It’s a familiar story: a man trying to escape his past is forced back into the life he left behind. Honestly, it’s the plot of Statham’s last couple of films, but ‘Shelter’ does offer a small, intriguing difference that sets it apart.

Jason Statham stars as Michael Mason, a highly skilled former spy who used to work for a secret MI6 program called Black Kite. He went off the books years ago after a mission went wrong, making him a target for his former colleagues. Now, he lives a quiet, secluded life in an old lighthouse on a remote Scottish island. He receives weekly deliveries of supplies from a young girl named Jessie, who travels to the island with her uncle. Otherwise, he avoids contact with the outside world and stays hidden from MI6.

Jessie and her uncle were delivering supplies when a storm hit, causing their boat to sink. Mason rescued Jessie, who was hurt, but sadly, her uncle didn’t survive. Knowing Jessie needs medical attention, Mason ventures into the nearest town to find it, despite the risk. Unfortunately, his appearance is caught by a new MI6 surveillance system. This alerts his former handler, Manafort, who sends a team to find and eliminate Mason – and anyone who might have seen him.

Mason immediately goes on the offensive against Manafort’s people and then flees with Jessie, relying on secret contacts and past relationships to protect her. As Manafort relentlessly chases them, his own sinister agenda becomes clear. Simultaneously, a determined and honest young agent named Roberta (Naomi Ackie) starts uncovering Mason’s history and the true reason Manafort is hunting down his most skilled former assassins.

The majority of the film “Shelter” centers on Mason trying to evade those sent to kill him, leading to chases and confrontations across various locations – from a remote lighthouse to the English countryside and the streets of London. It features plenty of exciting action, including car chases, gunfights, and hand-to-hand combat. However, what truly sets the film apart is the growing connection between Mason and Jessie, creating a touching father-daughter relationship. Jason Statham and Sofia Breathnach deliver surprisingly heartfelt performances, bringing depth to their roles.

Beyond a few novel elements, the movie largely retreads familiar ground. This issue kept bothering me as I watched. However, fans of Jason Statham, like myself, will likely enjoy his latest action film. It delivers plenty of excitement, and the developing relationship between the characters adds a surprisingly emotional depth that really benefits the movie.
