As a fan who has been following Richard Coles’ journey from the church to reality TV, I must say this latest announcement about his murder mystery series leaves me absolutely smitten! The fact that they’ve roped in none other than Neville Longbottom himself, Matthew Lewis, to play the lead character is simply magical!
The lead actor for Reverend Richard Coles‘s upcoming murder mystery series has been confirmed to be a former star from the Harry Potter series.
As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but share the exciting news about the upcoming adaptation of my favorite celebrity’s novel, “Murder Before Evensong,” which airs on Channel 5. The question on everyone’s lips – who will embody the intriguing character of Canon Daniel Clement – has finally been answered, though the revelation has only just come to light.
Now, the broadcaster has revealed that Matthew Lewis, best known for his portrayal of Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter films, will be taking on the main part.

The narrative centers around Clement, a local rector at Champton, living under one roof with his widowed mother, Audrey, and their pair of dachshunds.
When Daniel proposes setting up a toilet within the church, the community finds itself surprisingly and spontaneously at odds: boundaries are swiftly drawn, unearthed secrets threaten to disrupt the seemingly tranquil village life. The summary further explains.
Later on, Anthony Bowness, who was related to Bernard de Floures, the benefactor of Champton, was discovered deceased at the rear of the church. His death appeared to be caused by a stab wound inflicted with a pair of pruning shears in his neck.

Amidst the arrival of the authorities and mounting casualties, it falls upon Daniel to attempt to mend the broken pieces of his community… and apprehend a murderer.
Lewis expressed great excitement about putting on his old dog tag and delving into the captivating universe of Champton, so beautifully crafted by Reverend Richard Coles.
For quite a while, I’ve been deeply impressed by his literary creations, particularly the characters and tales he’s crafted. It’s a privilege to collaborate with this talented group, and I’m thrilled to breathe life into Canon Clement for both long-time readers and new audience members alike.

Coles expressed: “I’m absolutely thrilled that Canon Clement and his congregation will be brought to life on TV by the talented crew at The Lighthouse. I’ve already thought about making a guest appearance. Keep an eye out for a mysterious archdeacon riding a stationary bicycle!
In a new twist, it’s been announced that “Midsomer Murders” will have its script penned by Nick Hicks-Beach, while “Outlander” director David Moore will take the helm.
Coles appeared on the most recent season of I’m a Celebrity, where he finished in third place.
Murder Before Evensong will air on Channel 5 later in 2025.
