Revealed: The moments which caused concern with Jamie Theakston's fans as he reveals how losing his voice during radio show led to throat cancer diagnosis

As someone who has followed Jamie Theakston’s career for many years, it is heart-wrenching to learn about his recent cancer diagnosis. However, what strikes me most is not just his bravery in facing this challenge head-on but also his humility and gratitude towards his fans and colleagues.

After listeners noted changes in his voice during his radio broadcast, Jamie Theakston sought medical advice. It wasn’t until a few weeks later that he was diagnosed with throat cancer.

53-year-old celebrity from Heart FM, disclosed his cancer diagnosis on Tuesday, following the observation by viewers that his voice sounded unusual.

On September 1st, Jamie openly mentioned on Instagram that he had a health checkup because some of his audience members pointed out that his voice seemed unusual.

He mentioned that medical professionals discovered a growth or damage (lesion) on his vocal cords. They subsequently removed this lesion, but unfortunately, only a fortnight later, he was informed that he had been diagnosed with stage one laryngeal cancer.

Jamie, who is married to Sophie Siegle, shared on Instagram a while back: “Many of you listeners have pointed out that my voice hasn’t been quite right lately – I owe it all to you.

‘Got it checked. Doctors found a lesion on my vocal chords which I’ve had removed this weekend – thanks for all the kind messages – should be back on my feet soon – in the meantime…’ and finished the post with a zip-up mouth emoji.

Earlier posts on Heart FM’s Instagram have shown fans voicing worries about Jamie’s vocal health. One comment beneath a video dated August 22 reads: “Jamie, it seems like you should address that sore throat of yours.

After his recent posting, Jamie has taken a break from his hosting duties at Heart FM. On Tuesday, he disclosed that following a medical procedure called a biopsy, doctors informed him he has early-stage throat cancer.

He said: ‘Hi folks, as you know – I recently had an operation to remove a lesion from my vocal chords.

‘My biopsy results show it’s early-stage laryngeal cancer, but I won’t let cancer control my life. With a promising outlook, I aim to return to you by October.’

For now, I have been advised to take a break from speaking and let JK and Amanda handle things, as they are largely competent in their roles.

‘Huge thanks to them and all the Global family who have been unbelievably supportive.

‘Be thankful for this day, and when I see you next, I’ll have a great story to tell.’

As per the NHS, potential signs of laryngeal cancer may include:

In the UK, there are more than 2,000 new cases of laryngeal cancer each year. The condition is more common in people over the age of 60, and it’s more common in men than women.

Initially, Jamie gained widespread recognition in the mid-90s. He was particularly recognized for co-hosting the children’s program Live & Kicking alongside Zoe Ball starting from 1996. Subsequently, he took over as host of the music show Top of the Pops in 1999.

Following widespread recognition, the celebrity’s television journey persisted with high-profile roles such as hosting various programs on the BBC, like the music trivia show “A Question of Pop”, broadcasting events such as Glastonbury and The Millennium.

He soon moved over to Channel 4 where he rejoined Zoe to front The Priory – mix of celebrity chat, gossip and games – for three successful series.

Among my television ventures, you’ll find me on shows like “The Games,” “The People’s Quiz,” “Beg Borrow or Steal,” and “With a Little Help from My Friends.

Currently, Jamie is well-known not only for his achievements but also his thriving radio career. At present, he co-hosts the Heart FM national morning program alongside Amanda.

In my journey as a lifestyle guru, I found myself embarking anew on Radio 5 Live, and then, come 1999, I made the exciting transition to BBC Radio 1 to helm their Sunday Lunch program.
