Revealed: The bizarre way UK rockers Coldplay powered their recent Australian tour

As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for sustainability and a deep appreciation for music, I must say that Coldplay’s innovative approach to powering their concerts is nothing short of inspiring. Having attended countless shows over the years, I can attest to the energy that fills a stadium during a performance, and it’s truly heartening to see that energy being harnessed in such a productive way.

UK rockers Coldplay used pedal power to keep the lights on during their recent Australian tour.

The successful band, known for their yellow logo, has finished the Australian leg of their Spheres World Tour. They were hoping that along with the positive energy, fans would also contribute something extra.

Sharing a video of Thursday’s concert by the band at Sydney’s Accor Stadium, TikToker Ash Thomas observed enclosed spaces filled with individuals vigorously cycling on stationary bikes.

The band have previously revealed the bikes are used to help power the band’s live shows.

Ash posted a brief video, captioned ‘We set off at daybreak,’ that sparked a lot of discussion among their fans.

‘At the Coldplay concert, someone quipped about attending a spinning class instead.’

In an attempt to reduce their environmental impact, Coldplay revealed a series of eco-friendly strategies for their concerts in 2021, one of which involved using exercise bikes instead of traditional power sources.

In an interview with the BBC back in 2021, Chris elaborated on the idea, incorporating plans for a dynamic dance floor.

At the break of day, we take a journey. (Using “take a journey” instead of “ride” to make it more descriptive and adding “at the break of day” for a softer touch.)

The concert’s flooring consists of 44 eco-friendly, kinetic tiles engineered to generate electricity.

Chris stated, “As they move, they generate energy for the concert, just like our bicycles do as well.

As people become more active by moving around, they are essentially contributing or lending a hand, much like how a lead singer might urge the crowd, “Please jump up and down.

When I make that statement, I’m asking you quite seriously to start jumping up and down. If you don’t, then the lights will turn off.

Martin remarked back then that Coldplay “have quite a distance left to cover” since they aspire to be among the most eco-friendly tours ever held.

He added: ‘In some areas, there’s still not enough possible, like how do you get people to a venue without consuming any power? That’s still really hard.

‘Flying isn’t carbon neutral just yet – we need to continue balancing our emissions since even the most eco-friendly jet fuel still has some room for improvement.’

We recognize there’s still much progress to be made. However, regarding the TV series, it’s impressive that its entire operation runs on renewable energy, truly remarkable!

The band also announced, in 2021, a partnership with BMW, to develop the world’s first mobile, rechargeable show battery.

The kinetic energy generated by fans feeds into recyclable BMW i3 batteries which power 100 per cent of Coldplay’s shows.

As a die-hard enthusiast, I’m ecstatic to share that these batteries don’t just rely on traditional power sources. Instead, they tap into various eco-friendly energy alternatives like renewable diesel crafted from waste materials and solar energy. It’s all about embracing sustainable power!

One fan however, suggested that the bikes were merely a ruse to appease ‘bored’ millennials.

They mentioned that the bikes and trampolines are there merely for millennials to pass time, as they’re not connected to any devices or systems.
