Revealed: Netflix overtook BBC1 to become most-watched TV service in the UK for three months last year

For the initial time, Netflix surpassed BBC1 in terms of viewership, making it the most-watched television service in the United Kingdom for a span of three consecutive months during the previous year.

In the realm of television entertainment during the months of September, October, and November 2024, it was I who found myself delighting in the fact that my preferred streaming platform, Netflix, surpassed BBC1 in terms of audience reach, as per the data provided by BARB, the esteemed official ratings body of the UK.

In the realm of streaming entertainment for the past three consecutive months, I’ve found myself consistently drawn to Netflix, with an average viewership of a staggering 43.2 million households tuning in. Interestingly, this figure surpasses BBC1’s impressive 42.3 million viewers.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it this way: Despite Netflix breaking records with a staggering 46.4 million viewers in December, mainly due to the success of their UK original series Black Doves, BBC1 managed to maintain its lead once more.

Last month, BBC1’s audience reached approximately 48.4 million people, primarily due to popular holiday programs such as “Gavin & Stacey” and “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl.

Since March 2023, Netflix has consistently outperformed ITV1, the United Kingdom’s second-largest television network, in terms of viewership, even though there have been frequent negotiations with the BBC.

During the summer of 2024, ITV1 momentarily surpassed Netflix in viewership, experiencing a significant increase in audience during the Euro 2024 tournament. However, this surge declined drastically in August once more.

BARB keeps track of the quantity of individuals who viewed a specific TV service for more than three straight minutes during a given month. The data originates from October 2022, which was when Netflix initially agreed to have their viewing figures monitored by BARB in the United Kingdom.

In contrast to the BBC, who reached a total of 52.7 million viewers in December, both Netflix and Channel 4/Paramount trail behind, with Netflix boasting 46.4 million viewers and maintaining a consistent lead over Channel 4 and Channel 5/Paramount.

It has been disclosed that only about half of individuals aged between 16 and 24 years old are currently tuning into traditional TV, whether live or catch-up, on their household televisions, on a weekly basis.

Last year, approximately 48% of young adults typically watched media each week, which is a significant drop from the 76% that tuned in five years ago in 2018, as reported by Ofcom’s yearly Media Nations survey.

They watched traditional TV for an average of 33 minutes each day, down 16 per cent year-on-year.
