Revealed: Liam Payne's 'love song for his ex Naomi Campbell' recorded just weeks before his death - which he died believing would be his next hit

As a lifestyle expert with years of experience under my belt, I have seen countless stories of artists and their creative endeavors. However, the tale of Liam Payne’s unfinished song “Closer to You” is one that truly resonates with me.

According to the Mail on Sunday, Liam Payne composed and sang a special song expressing his affection towards supermodel Naomi Campbell.

In 2019, a former member of One Direction had been dating Ms. Campbell for quite some time, and following their split, he started writing the song ‘Closer to You’.

However, he postponed working on the love song that begins with a hint of her perfume still in the atmosphere, until recently this year, at last, he managed to record it.

He died believing it would be his next hit.

According to reports by The Mail on Sunday, it’s known that Liam, who tragically passed away in October following a fall from a hotel balcony in Argentina at only 31 years old, took great pride in the achievement. Moreover, we’ve learned that Ms. Campbell is cognizant of the fact that he wrote the song as a tribute to her.

As a lifestyle expert, I can share some insights about my personal experience with Liam’s recent relationship with Naomi. For approximately three to four months, they were an item, and it was clear that Liam approached their bond with his usual dedication and sincerity. Given his emotional nature, the relationship held significance for him.

The split was amicable and they remained friends.

The lyrics talk of his yearning ‘to get closer to you’ and reveal she was the one ‘who walked away.’

He repeatedly pleads: ‘I want to love you.’

He took special pride in the initial line of the melody: “I can still catch a whiff of your perfume in my room…

According to the source, Liam playfully mentioned that Naomi’s unique scent was so distinct that he could still detect it even after she had departed for a considerable time.

On Sunday, The Mail heard an early version of a three-and-a-half-minute tune that was produced in Los Angeles during July.

The tune was included in a legal document of 91 pages that contained over 400 files prepared by lawyers for Liam’s close friend, Argentine-American entrepreneur Roger Nores, during the ongoing probe regarding Liam’s demise, and presented to a court in Buenos Aires.

Mrs Nores and his girlfriend both contributed lyrics and melody to the song.

In August, Liam journeyed to Sweden, and there, he worked alongside renowned producer and composer Rani Yacoub on recording the final version of a song. It was Rani Yacoub who wrote the massive hit single ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ for One Direction.

Meanwhile, from Los Angeles, Grammy-winning Swedish music producer Max Martin, famous for penning hits like ‘Baby One More Time’ for Britney Spears and ‘I Kissed A Girl’ for Katy Perry, was also lending his talents to the project.

Songwriting legend Mr. Martin holds the second-highest number of No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, just behind Sir Paul McCartney. Among his many chart-toppers are “Shake it Off” by Taylor Swift and “I Want It That Way” by the Backstreet Boys.

According to the source, Liam appeared delighted upon returning to the studio alongside his old mentor, Mr. Yacoub.

2023 saw Mr Yacoub sharing a photo of him and Liam on Instagram, accompanied by this message: “I’ve been acquainted with this fantastic individual for nearly 13 years now. Apologies for the studio sessions I put you through, Liam, but judging by his expression, he truly enjoys it! Time may pass, yet certain aspects remain constant…

During his struggle with addiction, Liam abstained from alcohol and only consumed energy drinks like Red Bull. While battling his issues, he recorded the final version of ‘Closer to You’ during an extended eight-hour session that lasted through the night.

It’s said that he was apparently let go by both his recording and management firms, yet he held faith that the track would mark his return as an independent performer.

According to a source, Liam expressed great joy at reuniting with Rami in the recording studio and collaborating with Max again. Both of them are renowned figures, he said. His spirits were high, and he couldn’t stop laughing. He felt this new album would mark his grand return to the spotlight.

Liam and Ms. Campbell never spoke openly about the reported romance between them, as it occurred when she was 48 and he was only 25.

At the beginning of 2019, they were initially seen celebrating New Year’s together in Ghana, and their interactions on Instagram, which included liking and commenting on each other’s posts, suggested a playful flirtation.

Liam described her as ‘perfection in a person’ and she called him ‘a beautiful soul.’

Ms. Campbell did not make any comments regarding Liam’s death, instead she responded with a series of emoticons: a broken heart, dove, and prayer hand symbols, below a picture of Liam that was shared by singer Nicole Scherzinger following his tragic accident.

Liam had planned to debut the song as part of his global tour scheduled for 2025, but his drug relapse occurred while he was in Argentina, awaiting the renewal of his U.S. work visa.

The song, which has an upbeat, catchy melody, contains poignant lyrics about how much he yearns for Ms Campbell.

He reflects about wishing he could be ‘closer to you’ – which ended up being the song’s title.

‘Liam was laughing a lot and was so happy in the studio,’ the friend said.

It seems that those involved in creating ‘Closer to You’ are all hoping for a future release, as they want his fans to experience the wonderful music he continued to make until the end.

Tragically, Liam fell 45 feet off the balcony at the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires and passed away on October 16.

The autopsy showed that he had traces of substances like crack cocaine in his body, while it was disclosed that he requested multiple bottles of champagne and whiskey from room service in his last moments.

Last night, when Mr. Yocoub was spoken to by the MoS in Los Angeles, he chose not to discuss the matter, stating that Liam’s passing had a profound impact on him, making it difficult for him to speak about it.

Representatives for Ms Campbell and Mr Payne’s estate failed to respond to requests for comment.
