Viewers are just as captivated by the fashion choices of one contestant – her tweed capes, gloves, sweaters, and boots – as they are by the exciting game of betrayal on ‘The Traitors’.
When Claudia Winkleman hosted the first season of The Traitors in 2021, she only needed 12 different outfits – one for each episode.
After four successful seasons and attracting 12 million viewers, the 53-year-old actress requires 36 different outfits – three for each episode – and her stylist says preparing them takes months.
I’ve been working with this presenter for twenty years now, and honestly, getting ready for filming is intense! We basically take over London, moving everything – and I mean everything – from one place to another. It’s a huge operation, almost like preparing for a fashion show, with all the logistics and careful planning that entails.
It takes three months to get the former Strictly host’s famously extensive wardrobe ready, including extra outfits and rain gear to cover all possibilities.
Once selected, the outfits are transported up to Scotland lying flat in the back of a van.

For the past twenty years, McKeefry has also been responsible for designing and sourcing the outfits worn by contestants on Strictly Come Dancing.
For ‘Strictly,’ we aimed for glamorous but kept the look sophisticated and relatively simple, with a slightly masculine feel. ‘The Piano’ showcases Claudia’s true style – a more refined version of how she’d normally dress, including comfortable pieces like a Uniqlo sweater. ‘The Traitors’ allows for a bolder, more creative, and fashion-forward approach.
Looking back at the first season, which came out in 2021, 51-year-old Ms. McKeefry admitted, ‘We were really just figuring things out as we went.’
People were trying to figure out how the event would work. Someone suggested Claud could wear a parrot, and she’s always game for fun ideas. But I pointed out that we shouldn’t turn it into a silly, over-the-top performance.
McKeefry explained that styling Winkleman for the show gave her the chance to include accessories the star loved, like fingerless gloves and wrist warmers.
Claudia has always been a fan of wrist warmers. After her time on Strictly Come Dancing, she generously bought wrist warmers from Johnstons of Elgin for the hair, makeup, and wardrobe team – including me.

Adding fingerless gloves to the outfits on The Traitors was simple, but the producers were set on having red gloves for the ‘murder’ scenes, and I initially didn’t want to do it.
‘That is not something you’re ever going to see on a mood board of mine.
Honestly, my usual color scheme just wasn’t cutting it – red and black felt so…off. I needed gloves that wouldn’t clash, so I headed to Amazon and sifted through a bunch of choices. These thinner, fingerless gloves ended up being the best option – they didn’t completely ruin the look, which was a relief!
The latest episode of the show, featuring 22 players competing for a prize of up to £120,000, drew its biggest audience yet, with 6.9 million viewers tuning in. In this series, the ‘Faithful’ contestants are trying to identify and eliminate the ‘Traitors’.
