Returning Doctor Who star teases spinoff details
Actor Russell Tovey, who previously appeared on the hit show “Doctor Who,” has hinted at some aspects of the forthcoming spinoff series titled “The War Between the Land and the Sea.
The five-part series titled “UNIT Spinoff,” penned by Russell T Davies and Pete McTighe, features Arthur Darvill (Tovey) along with Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jemma Redgrave, Ruth Madeley, and Alexander Devrient as its main cast.
In the synopsis, it says that when a powerful and age-old creature rises from the sea, causing a significant revelation for mankind, a global emergency arises. As everyone’s safety is in jeopardy, UNIT takes action to face the situation as both land and water clash in conflict.
Viewers familiar with the series may recall Tovey, who once played a character in the 2007 Christmas special titled ‘Voyage of the Damned’. However, he will not be taking on his past role in the upcoming spinoff.
In a chat with Variety, Tovey provided insights into the upcoming miniseries, offering a sneak peek to enthusiasts and expressing admiration for his fellow actors.
When asked about important details for dedicated fans of Doctor Who, Tovey replied: “The tale of these beings actually surfaced in some Doctor Who episodes, possibly back in the ’60s. However, it’s been recently updated.
He went on to say: “There are members of UNIT inside. Jemma Redgrave delivers an exceptional performance as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, a character she plays here but takes it to new heights. Gugu Mbatha-Raw is amazing under prosthetics.” He marveled at how she manages such a remarkable performance.
In the interview, Tovey described “The War Between the Land and the Sea” as being similar to an independent film. He explained that it appeals to fans of “Doctor Who,” but still manages to feel entirely original.
In conversation about the director of the spinoff, Dylan Holmes Williams, Tovey expressed that the series has a “cinematic quality reminiscent of an independent film.” He went on to say, “I aimed for it to be raw, indie, and full of energy in that sense. And they agreed wholeheartedly.
In a different part of the conversation, Tovey expressed high regard for his colleagues by stating: “This job has been one of the happiest experiences in my career. Each day was simply fantastic. I adore the role I portray. I admire my fellow actors and the entire team behind the scenes.
The television series “Doctor Who” can be seen on BBC One within the United Kingdom, while it is aired on Disney+ internationally. In the UK, archived episodes of “Doctor Who” can be found on BBC iPlayer.
