Return to Paradise stars react to major Death in Paradise crossover

As a gamer who’s been following detective dramas for quite some time, I can’t help but be thrilled about the upcoming “Return to Paradise.” The appearance of Ardal O’Hanlon as Detective Jack Mooney is like a cherished reunion with an old friend from the beloved “Death in Paradise” series.

According to Anna Samson, who plays a role in Return to Paradise, Ardal O’Hanlon’s appearance in Death in Paradise was significant or crucial for the series.

In a conversation with Digital Spy and other reporters, the actress portraying DI Mackenzie Clarke shared her thoughts:

It’s crucial for us not to simply replicate [Return to Paradise], but rather to recognize its origins, the happiness it brought, and the devoted fanbase it amassed. Both these aspects hold equal significance, and I believe he plays a significant role in achieving this balance.

In the premiere of the series, O’Hanlon once again took on the character of Detective Jack Mooney, but unlike the rest of the cast, he wasn’t in Australia. Instead, Mooney, portrayed by O’Hanlon, was stationed in London and kept in touch with Mackenzie, who had gone to Australia following accusations of tampering with evidence, through remote communication.

Samson clarified, “Ardal O’Hanlon portrays my boss at the Metropolitan Police in London, where I’m from. Since Mackenzie has taken off due to some possible misconduct there, she’s been persistently trying to reach out to Mooney to find out what’s happening. Additionally, Mooney is a character that she admires.

She further explained: “She doesn’t have a large circle of people she deeply cares for or numerous friends, but he is one of the exceptions. It’s evident from our limited interactions on the phone.

After reviewing our shared film sequences, Samson acknowledged: “I never had the chance to personally encounter Ardal. He completed his scenes in London, while I did mine in Australia. We communicated via phone calls, but… it’s fascinating to see him appear on screen and notice the backdrop of the iconic London cityscape. I believe that moment is a delightful surprise [for our audience].

In January 2020, Mooney (O’Hanlon) departed from the show and returned to London to spend time with his daughter Siobhan (Grace Stone). Instead of pursuing things further with his love interest Anna (Nina Wadia), he chose this path. Later on, Ralf Little’s character Neville Parker took over Mooney’s role, but Parker recently left the show as well.

Fans of the “Death in Paradise” series who have watched it will likely be incredibly excited when they notice that Jack is present, as Samson’s co-star Lloyd Griffith put it.

I find it fantastic! Including such features truly makes it feel familiar and personal, which I believe will endear it even more to people.
