Okay, so the creators of Stranger Things are back with a new show on Netflix, and it sounds seriously cool. It’s called The Boroughs, and instead of kids investigating weird stuff, it’s a group of seniors in a retirement community! The trailer dropped yesterday, and it looks like an eight-episode sci-fi drama hitting Netflix on May 21st. The guys who did The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance are running things, with the Duffer Brothers executive producing. Honestly, it’s giving me major Cocoon and E.T. vibes – a really sweet, funny, and slightly spooky throwback to those 80s classics. I’m definitely adding this to my watchlist!
Alfred Molina stars in The Boroughs, a story set in a beautiful retirement community in the New Mexico desert. What seems like a perfect place to enjoy life quickly becomes a terrifying experience for Sam Cooper, a new resident still mourning the loss of his wife. Sam discovers that something monstrous and not of this world is lurking within the seemingly peaceful neighborhood.
When no one takes Sam’s urgent warnings seriously, he assembles a quirky team of neighbors to help. This unlikely group of heroes includes a clever ex-reporter, someone searching for meaning, a jaded music manager, and a doctor desperate for answers—played by an amazing cast featuring Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Denis O’Hare, Clarke Peters, and Bill Pullman. Together, they must expose a dangerous plot and prevent a powerful, otherworldly force from stealing the one thing everyone cherishes: time.
The new trailer shares the same captivating style and suspense that made Stranger Things so popular worldwide. Key scenes include a room filled with moving lights, a mysterious hand scratching at an oven door from within, a wall of old TVs turning on all at once, and a huge, monstrous creature threatening Denis O’Hare’s character. While the show has scary moments, it also focuses on the funny and heartfelt relationships between the established characters—like a playful scene where Alfre Woodard tries to ward off her friends with old pepper spray.
Instead of focusing on teenagers, the new series The Boroughs features well-known actors in a unique take on the supernatural mystery. With the residents preparing to defend themselves against a hidden threat, the creators – the team behind other popular shows – seem ready to deliver another big streaming success later this month.
