Report: Adele’s song to be pulled globally amid plagiarism case, Brazilian judge orders
As a seasoned music enthusiast with decades of listening under my belt, I must say this latest development surrounding Adele’s song “Million Years Ago” has me scratching my head. It seems that the pop diva is once again finding herself embroiled in a plagiarism controversy – a situation that has become as predictable as her chart-topping hits.
The Brazilian court’s decision may lead Adele to confront accusations of plagiarism, as they have ordered a global prohibition on playing one of her popular songs.
According to a report by Agence France Presse, Judge Victor Torres has ordered that Adele’s song “Million Years Ago” be removed from all global streaming platforms, including those owned by Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music. This order reportedly carries a fine of $8,000 for each instance of non-compliance, as per the ruling made in Rio De Janiero’s sixth commercial court on Friday.
Torres instructed the label to halt all activities related to “instant and worldwide prohibition” of using, duplicating, modifying, disseminating or profiting from the ballad titled “Million Years Ago,” which is a track from Adele’s 2015 album “25.” This song has been alleged to be a copy of the samba classic “Mulheres,” sung by Martinho Da Vila. The Brazilian song was penned by composer Toninho Geraes, who filed a plagiarism lawsuit against Adele in 2021, as reported by Veja Magazine. The song “Million Years Ago” was co-written by Adele and music producer Greg Kurstin.

At a recent court hearing, Ed Sheeran declared under oath that he did not draw inspiration from ‘Let’s Get It On’ by Marvin Gaye and Ed Townsend when collaborating on the creation of his song ‘Thinking Out Loud.’
A representative for Adele did not immediately respond to The Times’ request for comment.
Torres submitted a temporary restraining order while the plagiarism lawsuit continues, as reported by AFP. Fredimio Trotta, Geraes’ lawyer, criticized the “exploitative use” of Brazilian music to AFP and stated that his office will strive to ban Adele’s song from airplay on radio, TV, streaming services, and other global platforms.
2015 saw Adele’s “Million Years Ago” receiving criticism from fans of the late Kurdish singer Ahmet Kaya. People noticed resemblances and parallels between Kaya’s 1985 song “Acilara Tutunmak” and Adele’s track during its release, as reported by NME. However, no legal dispute arose from the alleged plagiarism claims.

At the conclusion of her two-year Las Vegas residency’s last performance number 100, Adele ended up shedding tears, informing the audience, ‘I’m unsure when I’ll feel ready for another performance.’
The prohibition on Adele’s “Million Years Ago” was issued weeks following the conclusion of her highly successful, multiyear Las Vegas residency at Caesars Palace’s Colosseum. Although she expressed deep regret about parting with her “Weekends With Adele” performances, the 16-time Grammy recipient earlier this year stated that she is eager for a well-deserved rest.
She expressed that for the past seven years, she’s been creating a fresh start for herself, and now, she desires to experience this new life.
