Renewing Star Trek: Starfleet Academy for a second season already is a bold move

As a lifelong Star Trek fan who’s been through the highs and lows of the Nu Trek Era, I find myself standing on the precipice of excitement and apprehension regarding Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. With an illustrious cast like Holly Hunter, Paul Giamatti, Oded Fehr, Robert Picardo, and Tig Notaro gracing the bridge, it’s hard not to feel a twinge of anticipation. Yet, as someone who’s been burned before by promising premises that didn’t quite deliver, I remain cautiously optimistic.

The upcoming Star Trek series, titled “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy,” is expected to premiere either towards the end of 2025 or early in 2026. This new show will introduce a fresh cast of actors, but will primarily revolve around lead actress Holly Hunter and main antagonist Paul Giamatti. Additionally, some familiar faces like Oded Fehr, Robert Picardo, and Tig Notaro are also set to reappear.

The story takes place at the 32nd-century Starfleet Academy, not much time after the conclusion of Star Trek: Discovery. Essentially, this new tale follows on from its predecessor, and there’s a chance that additional characters from Discovery might make appearances in the Starfleet Academy series. This suggests that characters could continue to appear across different series.

Although it could turn out to be an enjoyable and engaging series catering to younger audiences like those on CW or Teen networks, it remains uncertain if Starfleet Academy will truly live up to expectations. While we hope for its success, our optimism doesn’t guarantee quality. In other words, while we might expect it to be good, we can’t know for sure until the show is actually released and proven effective.

As a game enthusiast, I wouldn’t jump into a game without trying it first, right? That’s just logical. However, here we are, with nothing more than word-of-mouth about this upcoming show, no sneak peeks or trailers in sight. Yet, the team behind Paramount+ seems to have placed their bet and even renewed it for a second season already!

There’s solid logic behind that idea; no matter how bad the show is, it’s likely cheaper to produce a second season of television as opposed to greenlighting a whole new series. At least this way, the sets, and talent contracts are in place.

Yet, it’s still a risky choice, as the show may bomb. Fan perception of the Nu Trek Era hasn’t been the best and after a cancelation spree, the network can’t keep axing shows. It’s bad for morale.

If it continues, there’s no need for another season as Paramount+ might not pick up Starfleet Academy if it underperforms, unlike Warner Bros., who recently canceled their Mindy Kaling-led Scooby Doo series that received negative feedback. Interestingly, despite granting a second season to this criticized show, Warner Bros. still decided to pull the plug on it, suggesting an almost obligatory cancellation. This move was expected by many as most of us anticipated its failure.

Paramount+ has shown they won’t hesitate to end a series, as demonstrated by Star Trek: Prodigy. This show was in the middle of production, with most of the cast having already recorded their lines for the upcoming season, but the network unexpectedly canceled it. Therefore, another season isn’t certain if performance doesn’t improve.

It appears strange to endorse a project, such as the Starfleet Academy, without knowing if it’s quality is proven or not. Backing an unproven and distinct entity like this seems unusual. If a second season is granted, then we’ll know for certain that its success was deserved. Keep in mind, Paramount+ isn’t hesitant to cancel shows, so at least that offers some comfort.
