Renée Zellweger responds to Bridget Jones 4’s tragic twist

As a dedicated Bridget Jones fan who’s been following this series since its inception back in 2001, I must say, the latest twist in Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy has left me both heartbroken and intrigued. The news of Mark Darcy’s passing was a shock, not just because it’s fiction, but because he’s been a constant companion in my life for over two decades.

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy spoilers follow.

Renee Zellweger addressed the sad turn of events in “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy”, sharing that she “was moved to tears”.

Last Friday, November 12th, the first trailer for the upcoming film in the series was released, revealing that Mark Darcy, Bridget’s spouse and the father of William, had unfortunately passed away four years ago.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’d say: Given that the movie was an adaptation of Helen Fielding’s 2013 novel, it wasn’t completely unexpected for fans like me. However, Renee Zellweger herself shared with Empire Magazine that the new dynamics we see in the film felt a bit “strange” or “unusual”.

She started by saying, “It’s quite unusual due to my bond with this cherished character,” she explained. “I adore him – the role Colin portrays when we reunite. And it left me devastated. It was an odd feeling, being heartbroken over a fictional character leaving your life.

I’ve known him since 2000, and Colin has been a significant part of my journey since then. Leaving him out of this story feels unfair, and it’s made me emotional. It’s almost as if a piece of that shared experience, the magic of life, is vanishing.

Zellweger, who was nominated for an Academy Award for her portrayal in “Bridget Jones’s Diary”, went on to express the profound impact the character had on her throughout the years. She confided that she developed a sense of guardianship towards her.

I have a strong affection for this character. It’s a special treat to re-encounter her in a new phase of her life, witnessing her growth and development. She stirs feelings of warmth within me. Moreover, I take pride in ensuring her story is well-told and the project is top-notch.

Even though Mark has sadly passed away, Firth will step back into his role for Mad About the Boy , as the character is expected to appear in flashback scenes. Firth won’t be alone in this return, as Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Jim Broadbent, and Sally Phillips are also set to reappear.

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy is scheduled to be released in cinemas on February 14, 2025.
