Renée Victor, Weeds Star and the Voice of Abuelita in Coco, Dies

Actress Renée Victor, known for her roles in popular shows like ‘Weeds’ and movies such as ‘Coco’, sadly passed away.

According to reports, Victor passed away on a Friday evening, enveloped by loved ones at her residence in Sherman Oaks, California. The news of her demise is linked to lymphoma as the primary cause. At the time of her passing, she was 71 years old.

Following the sad news of their mother’s demise, Victor’s daughters, Raquel Victor and Margo Victor, released a statement saying, “Renee, who was adored for voicing ‘Grandmother’ in Disney’s 2017 hit film Coco, was loved by countless people worldwide. Her memory will be fondly remembered by everyone who knew her.

Born in San Antonio, Texas in 1938, Victor later moved to Los Angeles, California during the 1960s. Her foray into show business began as a vocalist for bandleaders such as Xavier Cugat and Perez Prado. Additionally, she taught dancing as a profession. Alongside her husband, they were known as “Ray & Renee,” a duo likened to Sonny and Cher, performing together from 1963 to 1973 across various global locations.

In the 70s, Victor additionally took on hosting duties for KTLA’s “Pacesetters,” concurrently joining the Screen Actors Guild. By the 80s, she began to secure roles in both films and television series. This list includes parts in the 80s shows such as “Hotel,” “Masquerade,” “Scarecrow and Mrs. King,” and “Matlock.” Additionally, she was featured as a dancer in the 1988 film titled “Salsa.

Throughout her career, Victor became well-known for some unforgettable performances. One of her most notable roles was as Lupita in the critically acclaimed Showtime series “Weeds”. She also made significant appearances on other shows such as “Snowpiercer”, “Dead to Me”, “Mayans M.C.”, “All Rise”, and “A Million Little Things”. In the 1990s, Victor provided voiceovers for the animated adaptation of “The Addams Family” series. Her other TV credits include “Men Behaving Badly”, “ER”, “Women’s Murder Club”, “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne”, “Vida”, “Victor and Valentino”, and “With Love”.

Fans of Disney will also admire Victor’s contribution to the 2017 animated success, “Coco“, where she lent her voice to Abuelita. This work came after her performance in the 2014 horror film, “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones“. Throughout her career, she has been featured in numerous films such as “The Doctor“, “Steal Big Steal Little“, “The Prophecy II“, “The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit“, “Confessions of a Shopaholic“, “Assassination Tango“, “A Night in Old Mexico“, and “Superfly“. Her last appearance on the big screen was in 2023’s “Moe” before she retired from acting.

In a previous interview at Clover Health, Victor expressed her affection for acting by saying, “Acting keeps all my skills honed.” She explained that memorizing lines, arranging scenes, considering costumes, styling hair and makeup, and developing a character demand ongoing exploration and creativity.
