The US remake of ITV dramedy Doc Martin has just added a Grey’s Anatomy star to its cast.
Actress Abigail Spencer, recognized by “Grey’s Anatomy” enthusiasts for her portrayal of Dr. Megan Hunt, has now officially joined the cast of the upcoming series “Best Medicine,” which is set to remake the cherished British medical drama (as reported by Variety).
In May, it was announced that “Best Medicine” is planning to act on the other side of the ocean. The popular TV series “The Handmaid’s Tale” actor, Josh Charles, will portray the main character, Dr. Martin Best.
This time, instead of donning scrubs, Spencer will play the role of schoolteacher Louisa Glasson, who has a confrontational start with Martin.
In the heart of the British TV scene, I’ve been known as the main character, graciously portrayed by Martin Clunes, across a decade-spanning ten series that aired on ITV from 2004 to 2022. The captivating Louisa was brought to life by Caroline Catz, and she was a constant presence throughout all these seasons.
In addition, Lucy Punch and Stephanie Cole were also part of the cast in previous seasons. The series, titled “Doc Martin“, chronicles the story of a brusque London surgeon-turned-GP who moves to the Cornish coast due to an aversion to blood (haemophobia).
Over time, the show garnered a dedicated fanbase, as fans on IMDb frequently praised it enthusiastically in their user reviews.
One viewer remarked that “Doc Martin” is nearly flawless, while another fan praised the series for distinguishing itself among cozy medical dramas through its grating leading character.
In this review, they note that the exceptional television series stands out from the overly sweet medical/police dramas set in a charming, offbeat rural town, primarily due to the remarkably awkward demeanor of the main character, Dr. Martin, brilliantly portrayed by Martin Clunes.
It’s reported that the American reboot will delve into a comparable plot, featuring Dr. Best giving up his Boston position for a new role in the charming coastal town where he used to vacation as a child.
Regrettably, Martin’s straightforward and somewhat brusque demeanor tends to clash with the eccentric and dependent locals, particularly the local schoolteacher named Louisa Glasson, as suggested by the show’s tagline.
In their tiny village, perseverance is deeply ingrained in everyone, making them potentially the ideal solution.
