Relief for Kate Garraway amid money woes as it is revealed she will keep her job on Good Morning Britain despite ‘savage’ ITV cutbacks

Upon ITV disclosing planned reductions for their morning show Good Morning Britain, concerns arose about the potential impact on Kate Garraway’s tenure with the network.

In a difficult financial situation already, losing her job alongside her fellow stars would have spelled catastrophe for her, as they all found themselves competing for employment.

However, it has been disclosed by TopMob that beloved Kate will retain her position despite the reductions taking place after the merge of Good Morning Britain (GMB) with ITV News.

Reports indicate that she and her team members are expected to retain their positions, while it’s possible layoffs may affect the behind-the-scenes staff. Kate, aged 58, is rumored to be in significant financial trouble, reportedly seeking aid from her bank due to debts estimated at around £800,000.

Additionally, she was equally surprised when she received a £280,000 tax demand from the closed therapeutic business of her deceased spouse, Derek Draper, during the previous month.

An ITV source said: ‘There will be a bit of moving people around but all of the roster will stay.

‘The public adores Kate, so her position is secure. She might have faced dismissal due to budget cuts, but fortunately, most savings will come from eliminating redundant coverage rather than layoffs on stage. Regrettably, many employees behind the scenes will be let go.’

‘It will be such a relief for Kate, she has had a horrid time and money is an issue for her.’

Concurrently, it is worth noting that Lorraine Kelly, aged 65, remains with ITV, even though the duration of her shows has been reduced from one hour to half an hour.

Starting in January 2026, Good Morning Britain (GMB) will expand for a full extra hour to cover that time slot, airing from 6:00 AM to 9:30 AM every day.

Lorraine, which usually operates for nearly the full year, will instead broadcast for just 30 weeks out of a possible 52.

Sources said she was ‘fuming’ at the cuts, especially as she was once so powerful at ITV.

In May, it was announced that there would be significant changes to the lineup of shows coming up, as GMB, Lorraine, and This Morning will be relocated from their current studios by next year.

Lorraine and Loose Women will likely bear the majority of the reductions, as Good Morning Britain’s program is set to combine with ITN, the team responsible for producing ITV News.

In an effort to reduce expenses, the company made a contentious move to close its U.S. office, a part of broader cost-cutting measures affecting ITV daytime operations.

The TV program “Loose Women” will continue airing at its present time, from 12:30 to 13:30 every day, but it will be reduced to broadcasting for only 30 weeks annually.

The morning show “This Morning,” presented by Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard, will continue to air from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM every weekday throughout the year.

54-year-old Susanna Reid, who’s been a main host on Good Morning Britain since its debut in 2014, is set to continue her role as one of the program’s key anchors.

I’ve heard it myself; they mention that Richard Madeley, at 69, and Ed Balls, being 58, are set to continue their hosting roles. Meanwhile, Charlotte Hawkins, age 50, and Ranvir Singh, aged 47, will also persist in their hosting duties.

However, it’s understood there will be limited shows for Adil Ray, 51.

It’s estimated that ITV currently employs around 450 people during the daytime, but there could be a potential loss of up to 220 jobs.

After spending 18 years caring for her husband, Derek, who passed away at the age of 56 in January 2024 after a four-year struggle with long-term Covid, Kate was burdened with substantial financial debts as a result.

In January, she admitted dealing with a high amount of debt that she couldn’t pay off, during her disagreements with Health Secretary, Wes Streeting.

As a lifestyle advisor, I’ve found myself in a situation many might relate to – my late husband’s monthly care expenses, totaling an overwhelming £16,000, surpassed my income from ITV. This financial strain has unfortunately led me to accumulate substantial debts. It’s a harsh reality that many face when unexpected life events outpace our earnings.

At that moment, she expressed her feelings by saying: ‘I feel embarrassed about being in debt despite having a fantastic job that I adore, which offers me a high income.’

I’m not someone who drives long distances, covering my own travel expenses, just to provide assistance to someone at a very low wage.

‘I’m somebody that is very well paid and so I just feel a shame that I couldn’t make it work.’
