Reimagining of classic ’80s detective duo story from Happy Valley producer to get ‘exhilarating twist’
The detective duo from Agatha Christie’s mysteries, Tommy and Tuppence, are set for a fresh update – incorporating a contemporary twist in the storyline.
Characters initially introduced in the 1922 novel “The Secret Adversary” by the crime author, will be reappearing in a fresh six-episode series, which is set against the backdrop of the contemporary world.
Tommy and Tuppence haven’t made their first appearance on screen. They were previously featured in a classic ITV series called “Agatha Christie’s Partners in Crime,” which aired in 1983, with James Warwick and Francesca Annis starring as the main characters.

The streaming service BritBox has greenlit a new show, with production handled by the team responsible for “Happy Valley,” namely Lookout Point. Phoebe Eclair-Powell, known for “The Road Trip,” is penning the series’ scripts, and filming is scheduled to start towards the end of this year.
Although the specific plot details are still under wraps, the series titled “Tommy & Tuppence” is expected to unfold in a serene corner of Hampstead, North London. However, this tranquil setting takes a dark turn when it transforms into a crime scene following a murder.
In four of Agatha Christie’s novels and one short story, we find this pair who had lost touch but rekindled their relationship in their twenties. They worked together and found themselves falling in love, a bond that lasted from their youth into their golden years following retirement.
According to executive producer Katie Draper, Phoebe’s fantastic screenplays skillfully blend witty slapstick humor, flirtatious affection, and suspenseful crime elements for a fresh, captivating reinterpretation of Agatha Christie’s classic detective duo in today’s world.
Eclair-Powell expressed that penning the series was a long-held dream for him. He further noted: “Christie’s detective duo are quick-witted, incisive, and eager to tackle numerous murders, while pondering if they should be more than just crime-fighting partners.
Tommy & Tuppence does not yet have a release date.
