Reese Witherspoon’s Roast That Ended Her Friendship with a British Star

Reese Witherspoon asserts that an undisclosed actress ended their friendship following an instance where the actress made fun of her during a speech at a sophisticated awards ceremony in Britain.

Fans are now convinced that Kate Winslet might be the actress involved in the clandestine dispute with her.

In a conversation with PEOPLE, the actress who played Elle Woods in Legally Blonde, Reese (aged 48), didn’t reveal the identity of another actress. However, fans think they have cracked the mystery after noticing that she paid tribute to Kate Winslet (aged 49) at the BAFTA/LA Cunard Britannia Awards in 2007.

So what did Reese actually say that was so bad?  

In her lighthearted address, Reese seemed to have misunderstood the appropriate tone as she playfully teased about Kate’s accent and a nude scene from the movie “Iris” that was released in 2001.

Instead of referencing her comment about ‘laser hair removal’, it was this detail from her latest interview that led fans to believe they had correctly guessed who Kate might be.

As reported by JustJared, they revealed pieces of a conversation where Reese mentioned to the audience that she was unable to disclose any private anecdotes about herself and Kate due to them being overly explicit, scandalous, or inebriated.

Apart from what she had previously mentioned, she apparently reminisced about several instances. These included a moment when they considered getting laser hair removal, an incident on the highway where they stopped, and a particularly amusing event that transpired while they were both wearing only their undergarments.

As stated on the site, the speech commenced with: ‘I’ve always aspired to become a European film star, sport large sunglasses, don ornate neck scarves, puff on handmade cigarettes, and exude elegance and weightiness.’

Picture this scenario: It was quite a stroke of luck when Kate Winslet, my new neighbor, dropped by unannounced, saying, “Darling, Sam isn’t home right now, and it seems our kids are around the same age. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if they could play together? Oh, and by the way, I’ve been here since 8 o’clock without a sip to drink. By any chance, do you have some wine?” (She spoke with a charming British accent.)

Subsequently, she expressed admiration for Kate’s lack of apprehension regarding her well-known nude scene: “When she plunged into the lake, bare as a breeze, my first thought was ‘That water must be freezing!’ Then I marveled, ‘What an actor without fear!’

This week, during a recent interview, The Big Little Lies star revealed that an anonymous actress had requested her to deliver a speech at the event on her behalf.

She stated that our friendship has ended. To make it clear, I wasn’t joking – our friendship is over now, she explained, implying that she no longer feels fond of me.

Along with the star’s name, Reese did not reveal the name of the ceremony or when it took place.

She mentioned that there was someone acquainted with me, not someone I knew particularly well, as she was a quite formal and dedicated actress. This person asked for my assistance in granting her an award,” she clarified.

Since I hadn’t attended an award ceremony like this before, I mistakenly assumed it was more like a roast. Consequently, I stood up and delivered a roast instead.

Yet, she swiftly comprehended that her humor didn’t resonate with the crowd at the event, a realization that continues to linger in her mind.

The atmosphere at the event was refined and sophisticatedly British, and it reminded her of when we had that laser hair removal session. She chuckled as she reminisced, “Do you remember that time?

She mentioned, “I’m still ashamed about it. I found it amusing at the time, but it turned out, I was speaking to the wrong crowd, as she put it, regarding her speech.

The situation was quite unfortunate. Indeed, I’m not exaggerating when I say we no longer communicate. Oh well, that seems to be it for now, as he put it, having won an Oscar.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t contain my excitement over the upcoming Legally Blonde prequel series! Though Reese Witherspoon is keeping her former actress buddy under wraps, she’s been more than happy to spill the beans about this highly anticipated project.

She told PEOPLE this week that production on the TV series will begin in March 2025.

In the year 2001, Reese Witherspoon brought the beloved character Elle Woods, a sorority girl who later became a lawyer, to life in Legally Blonde.

The hit film also starred the likes of Jennifer Coolidge, Selma Blair and Luke Wilson. 

The sequel Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde was released in 2003.

She’s brimming with enthusiasm! She shared that they’ll kick off the spin-off series in March. As it stands, they’re in the midst of casting, trying to find the perfect actor to portray the younger version of herself. It’s quite surreal for her, she admitted.

She also finds it thrilling to observe these young women who radiate enthusiasm and excitement, and are simply outstanding in every way. The challenge lies in choosing among so many exceptional candidates, as there are just too many talented individuals to select from, she remarked.
