Reese Witherspoon shares enthusiastic update on third Legally Blonde film

Reese Witherspoon shared an exciting update on the highly anticipated third Legally Blonde film.

The actress, fresh off her 50th birthday celebrations, suggested that her famous role as Elle Woods might be coming back.

In a recent interview with Bustle, she confirmed that the highly anticipated sequel is still in the works, saying simply, ‘Absolutely.’

Reese Witherspoon indicated that the script and overall setting of the movie are still being developed and improved.

‘It’s a whole world that we want to build with this character,’ she explained.

Reese Witherspoon understands many fans are eager to see Elle Woods back on screen, especially to follow her journey through a significant new chapter in her life.

She noted that women are drawn to complex characters that feel realistic, similar to the positive response seen with the Barbie movie.

Many women feel a connection to characters from their childhoods and are excited to support Elle Woods, recognizing her as much more than just a stereotypical ‘girly’ figure.

Witherspoon added: ‘She’s part of your identity of self-worth and accomplishment.’

She confirmed the movie is still planned, shortly after news came out about a release date for the Legally Blonde prequel series, Elle.

A new TV show featuring Lexi Minetree as Elle Woods in high school will debut on Amazon Prime Video on July 1st.

Laura Kittrel created the series, and it’s being produced by Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine production company. A second season has already been approved, even before the first one airs.

In the same interview, Witherspoon also talked about how the original Legally Blonde has become a beloved classic, continuing to inspire women of different generations.

‘I had no idea,’ she said. ‘We worked really hard on the messaging.’

She explained that she really wanted the story to focus on a woman’s life and experiences, rather than just her love life.

You know, she was telling me about a really powerful time in her life. It was all about her taking on a huge challenge and achieving it completely on her own. She felt strongly that defining herself and her twenties through her own efforts was more important than any relationship at that point.

The third movie is co-written by Mindy Kaling and Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-creator Dan Goor.

It’s been over a year since the last news about Legally Blonde 3. Mindy Kaling announced at that time that a finished script was turned in near the end of 2024.

In a February 2025 interview with Variety, Mindy Kaling revealed that she and Dan Goor had completed a draft of ‘Legally Blonde 3’ and submitted it before Christmas, though she couldn’t share any details about the plot.

This project has been in development for years, and Kaling also gave a sneak peek at what the third movie will be about.

In January 2021, Mindy Kaling expressed her excitement to find out how audiences would react to their portrayal of Elle Woods, according to Access Hollywood.

Since we created the character of Elle Woods at age 40, it’s been a lot of fun exploring how she’s changed and grown from when she was 21.

Jennifer Coolidge will likely be back as Paulette in the next Legally Blonde movie, and Reese Witherspoon is confirmed to reprise her role as Elle Woods.

In 2019, Reese Witherspoon said she’d love to play her famous character again while appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

She expressed her enjoyment of the role, calling the character fantastic. When asked if she’d reprise it, she playfully suggested she was open to the idea if fans were interested.
