Reed Richards Has Facial Hair in ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Because Pedro Pascal Doesn’t Like How He Looks Without It
Is it bothering you that Marvel made Reed Richards grow a beard in The Fantastic Four: First Steps? Fault can be placed on Pedro Pascal for the character portrayal.
In the constantly changing landscape of superhero movies, where comic book authenticity frequently conflicts with Hollywood style, Pedro Pascal’s interpretation of Reed Richards (also known as Mr. Fantastic) in Marvel’s upcoming film “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” has ignited discussion for various reasons. However, one aspect that particularly catches attention is his mustache.

I’ve often pondered over the intriguing difference between the clean-shaven comic book character and the bearded real-life version of this genius. As it turns out, Pascal himself explains it in a straightforward manner: he dislikes his appearance without facial hair.
In a debate on LADbible’s “Agree to Disagree” series, it was during this encounter that Pascal, famous for his scruffy looks in shows like The Mandalorian and The Last of Us, openly expressed his stance on facial hair matters. Alongside Vanessa Kirby, his Fantastic Four colleague, they discussed life’s major questions, even diving into the ongoing saga of mustache versus beard.

He remarked, “My beard is quite impressive, but if I were to remove it altogether, I would appear rather unattractive.” He strongly prefers his current facial hair style.
He also referenced a past event: his portrayal of Maxwell Lord in the 2020 film “Wonder Woman 1984”, where he shaved completely for the role, a choice he now wishes he hadn’t made under Patty Jenkins’ direction and alongside Gal Gadot.
He expressed his dismay, stating, “The way I appeared in ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ left me utterly shocked. I adored the film, but I was so taken aback by my appearance that I haven’t re-watched it unless absolutely needed.

It’s fortunate for Pascal (possibly preserving his self-esteem) that the team behind “The Fantastic Four” proved to be more considerate. Critics often claim that Marvel no longer prioritizes comic book authenticity, and it seems that appeasing a star’s sensitive ego and vanity mattered more to the once influential studio than delivering an accurate adaptation faithful to comic book fans.
He confessed that if required to shave completely for the film “Fantastic Four,” he would have complied. However, he emphasized that the looks for everyone in the movie were a result of a highly collaborative process.
The outcome? Reed Richards now sports a mustache, giving him a resemblance to Pedro Pascal rather than his usual comic book appearance. This decision has stirred up controversy among dedicated Marvel fans who are accustomed to seeing Reed Richards as clean-shaven.

Pascal has faced the glare of fans’ criticism before, as evident when he spoke with Vanity Fair. He openly admitted to dealing with the controversy surrounding his role assignment.
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I’ve got to express my thoughts about this actor: “He seems too old for the role, it doesn’t quite fit, and a little trim would be appreciated.” Ever since his casting was announced, there’s been a wave of discontent among longtime comic book fans that I’ve felt more acutely than any other project I’ve been involved with.
Pascal, along with his distinctive beard, has been confirmed to reprise his role as Reed in the upcoming blockbuster movie, “Avengers: Doomsday,” and likely also in its follow-up film, “Avengers: Secret Wars” scheduled for 2027.

With the upcoming release of “The Fantastic Four,” there’s curiosity about whether audiences will accept the new, furry take on a beloved character, or if it might push their tolerance for disbelief beyond its limits.
One thing’s for sure: Pedro Pascal isn’t shaving anytime soon.
