Reddit Mods Slam Snyderverse Fans’ Spoiler Campaign Against New Superman Movie!

In simpler terms, the administrators of r/SnyderCut, the biggest fan base focused on Zack Snyder’s DC movies, have spoken out against a recent post encouraging fans of the Snyderverse to disrupt the debut of Superman, which is the initial installment in James Gunn’s new DC Universe.

Earlier this week, a post that went viral on social media urged users to leak spoilers, leave unfavorable reviews en masse, and disrupt ticket sales – all under the banner of supporting the Snyderverse cause.

The event started after a Reddit user posted a message titled “Rise up for the Snyderverse on July 11” within the r/SnyderCut online community, outlining a plan to interfere with Superman’s introduction, involving three key steps.

The message suggested that enthusiasts of Snyder should share spoilers across various platforms, write unfavorable reviews on rating websites, and make ticket reservations online without finalizing the transaction.

The user stated, “Gunn initiated the attack that eliminated the Snyderverse, but now we have an opportunity to counterattack against him.” The hashtags used were #BringBackTheSnyderverse and #IfSupermanIsNotForUsThenNoneWillBe. This version maintains the original meaning while using simpler language for easier understanding.

James Gunn Responds

The post swiftly spread across various social media networks, such as Threads, where a user pointed it out to James Gunn, who is both the director of Superman and co-head at DC Studios. Gunn responded directly, dismissing worries about significant effects from the attempt to sabotage.

Ha, I believe we’re going to make it through,” Gunn expressed. “To be honest, I doubt the opinions of the eight individuals who follow that person (I’m assuming it’s a man), will significantly alter the outcome.

Gunn’s comments resonated with a growing sense of discontent among ordinary DC fans, as well as many supporters of Snyder, who perceived his statement as causing division rather than fostering constructive discussions.

Moderators Reject the Campaign

In a closed discussion focusing on the debate, the moderators of r/SnyderCut admitted to removing a post about two hours after it went live, explaining that it didn’t garner much interest or interaction before its deletion.

Additionally, they published an official declaration, clearly stating their dissociation with the content and explaining the rules of their subreddit.

I, as a moderator, want to clarify that the contentious post you saw was never endorsed by us. As an open community, we don’t pre-approve every post. The presence of a post in our subreddit doesn’t imply our approval or support for its content.

The moderators went on to explain their rationale for removal.

They stated that the post clearly breached our rules, not only literally but also in its essence, and thus required immediate deletion. Instead of being debatable, the post was generally disliked by all.

The moderators emphasized that while viewers have the right to decide which films they financially back, they firmly oppose any form of deceit or tampering intended to prevent others from watching a movie.

A Pattern of Online Flashpoints

On previous occasions, disagreements have flared up between the Snyderverse fan community and the latest DC management team. In 2023, for instance, director David Ayer encountered criticism from certain fans when he expressed approval towards the movie “Superman” and its promotional clip.

Previously associated filmmaker Ayer advised against a fresh “Ayer Cut” movement synchronized with the debut of the Superman trailer. The overly passionate Snyderverse social media outburst caused him to step back from online discussions, expressing concerns about the harmful and toxic responses he encountered.

Gunn Addresses Backlash in Rolling Stone Interview

As a movie critic, I recently found myself reflecting on director James Gunn’s insightful words during his interview with Rolling Stone. He gracefully addressed the controversy surrounding fan resistance, particularly the attempted dismantling of the Snyderverse within the Superman universe. Despite recognizing the existence of dissenters, he skillfully highlighted that opposition doesn’t always equate to the negativity some might assume.

Gunn expressed that he’s fine with the situation and even finds it beneficial. He suggested that it’s not ideal for everyone to cheer for you as it might make things appear too perfect.

It was pointed out that a certain amount of disagreement is a typical aspect of the creative development within a sizable franchise like DC.

He mentioned, “It’s fine to encounter a differing viewpoint occasionally.” He went on to say, “Sometimes things can get overly dramatic — I’ve noticed that whenever something new is introduced, no matter how well-received it might be, there will always be something that sparks intense debate. It was the intense debate that the sun caused Superman discomfort.

New DCU Moves Forward

On July 11th, Gunn’s “Superman” will initiate the DCU’s reboot. In this movie, David Corenswet portrays Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan plays Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult takes on the role of Lex Luthor. The supporting cast includes Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Milly Alcock, Anthony Carrigan, and Edi Gathegi.

In the same interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn explained that he chose to remove the “Legacy” subtitle from the film’s name, instead going with just “Superman”. Additionally, he disclosed that the title of the upcoming Supergirl movie has been modified as well for uniformity within the new universe.
