Red carpet host under fire for awkward moment with Ariana Grande: ‘Stop making everyone uncomfortable!’

At the 2025 Golden Globes, Marc Malkin, who is a host for Variety’s red carpet events, faced criticism following an uncomfortable interaction with Ariana Grande during the event on Sunday.

Before the grand event began at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, the head culture and events editor for the media platform conversed with several famous personalities.

As a lifestyle connoisseur, I found myself in an awkward situation during my recent encounter with the captivating actress from Wicked, aged 31. My attempt to engage Ariana in a spontaneous duet on the red carpet, though well-intentioned, may have left some fans feeling uneasy due to its potentially cringe-worthy nature. I apologize for any discomfort caused and aim to learn from this experience, ensuring future interactions remain respectful and enjoyable for all parties involved.

He asked her if she could hum a tune for him briefly, offering to join in himself. However, when she demurred with a bashful ‘No way!’, he found herself declining.

Grande then added, ‘What should we sing? I want you to start,’ followed by a brief pause. 

Afterward, Malkin faced Ariana as he started crooning the words to “You’ve Got A Friend” by Carole King.

Instead of joining him right away to sing the song, she playfully mentioned she was still in a fantastical land like Oz, and later commended the red carpet host for his impromptu performance with an applause.

He quickly cut in to say, ‘I’m going to be opening for Ariana who’s not going on tour by the way.’

Marc mentioned, “I wanted to share that although I understand the fans’ desire for a tour, my focus right now is on acting.

As a fervent admirer, I couldn’t help but express my views when social media erupted with reactions to Marc Malkin’s interview about X at the Golden Globes. One user, in particular, penned a message that resonated with me: ‘Marc Malkin, you’re just so awkward! Please, stop making everyone uncomfortable by forcing them to sing the #GoldenGlobes!’

“What makes Marc Malkin come off as so annoying?” Another person put it, “I’d politely decline an interview with him on the Golden Globes Red Carpet if I were in that position. Repetitively asking everyone the same question and attempting to coerce them into singing is old hat.

One exclaimed, ‘This interviewer seems incredibly uncomfortable and awkward, as if they dug up the most unnerving, squirm-inducing individual imaginable! Please switch to another segment without returning.’

4. In the first message, it was said that ‘Marc Malkin is not welcomed on my timeline today,’ and in the second message, someone asked, ‘Who is Marc Malkin? He appears to be the most annoying person I’ve ever seen.’

1. A fan wrote, “Remove Marc Malkin from the screen,” while another said, “He seems like a lovely gentleman with fantastic dinner parties, but it’s time to reconsider his appearances on red carpets.” (or)

2. The first fan requested, “Take Marc Malkin off the screen,” and the second one suggested, “I believe he’s a wonderful individual with impressive dinner soirees, but I feel it’s high time we consider limiting his presence on red carpets.” (or)

3. A fan expressed, “Let’s take Marc Malkin off the screen,” and another suggested, “He seems to be an outstanding fellow with delightful dinner gatherings, but I think it’s past due for us to reevaluate his involvement in red carpet events.” (or)

4. The first fan demanded, “Please remove Marc Malkin from the screen,” while the second one expressed a desire, “He appears to be a charming man with captivating dinner parties, but I feel it’s about time we discuss reducing his visibility on red carpets.” (or)

5. One fan called for, “Marc Malkin’s removal from the screen,” and another suggested, “Although he seems to be a gracious man with elegant dinner events, I believe we should start questioning his regular appearances on red carpets.”

In a different part of their conversation during the interview, Marc and Ariana talked about the 1966 Givenchy gown she selected for the Golden Globes, which was a nod to the iconic character from Wicked.

In the musical film version of Wicked, I portray a character who is closely associated with the color yellow, much like Glinda herself favors it. To elaborate, the road my character follows is symbolically represented as yellow – the Yellow Brick Road.

The songstress was notably nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Glinda. 

Regarding who she hopes to encounter at the gathering, Grande expressed, “It’s truly thrilling for me to be present since I admire everyone I run into here. I’ve just met Jodie Foster! That was absolutely unbelievable.

“Encountering Ralph Fiennes was an incredible, unanticipated joy! As a huge admirer of many artists, this encounter has undoubtedly been the most exhilarating surprise of my lifetime. Everyone here has shown such kindness.

In November 2024, the movie “Wicked” was put forward for consideration in four categories at the Golden Globes.

In the awards ceremony, Ariana was recognized with a Best Supporting Actress nomination, while her fellow actress, Cynthia Erivo, earned a nomination for Best Actress. The movie itself received accolades in two categories: Cinematic Achievement and Box Office Success.

Within the event space, Grande took a moment to capture more pictures highlighting her stylish evening ensemble, and was snapped sitting with Erivo at a table.

Regarding us both receiving nominations, Ariana shared with People last December that we were overjoyed together, crying and shouting, and we instantly exchanged flower bouquets.

I’m incredibly proud of her, and of our accomplishments as a team. To see our efforts acknowledged is far more meaningful than I ever thought possible.

She commented, “You wouldn’t anticipate such an occurrence while engaged. One tends to merely perform the tasks and concentrate on the tasks, but for me, simply having the opportunity to work each day was a reward in itself.

However, when such an event occurs, it’s incredibly intense and overpowering, the celebrity further explained to the media source.

Although she didn’t win her initial Golden Globe award, Grande was still bestowed with a special recognition during the Palm Springs International Film Festival earlier this week on Friday.

Fellow actress Jennifer Coolidge presented Ariana with the Rising Star award during the event. 

Prior to stepping up to receive the accolade, Jennifer playfully pondered aloud, “Haven’t Ariana’s achievements already catapulted her to the stars?

The songstress also quipped while accepting the award, ‘You don’t know how much it means to me.’

As someone who has been in the spotlight since my childhood, I hadn’t anticipated being referred to as a ‘rising star’ once more at 31. However, here I am, eager to express my gratitude. Firstly, I’d like to thank my trusted companions, Botox and Juvederm, for helping me maintain that youthful glow which, in turn, has contributed to this recent recognition.

Previously known Nickelodeon actor remarked, ‘I expected to be labeled as a “fading star” or a “wilting star” by this point, but I appreciate the contrary.’

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but express my heartfelt admiration for the comedic genius that is Coolidge. His brilliance has not only captivated me but has profoundly influenced every aspect of my life. Ariana’s shoutout to him was the cherry on top!

On that special night, she expressed her appreciation towards her fellow actor, Cynthia Erivo, and director, Jon M. Chu, for their part in creating such a beautiful experience.
