Record-breaking Vitality lock down playoff spot at IEM Melbourne
Very few teams appear capable of stopping the Vitality juggernaut in Melbourne.
With their recent 2-0 victory (scores: 13-5 and 13-8) against Team Liquid at IEM Melbourne, Team Vitality has extended their current winning streak in CS2 to the third longest ever recorded.
Tomorrow, they will compete for a place in the semifinals. However, today’s win ensures that the world’s top team will not end lower than sixth in Australia. Most notably, they have now won 18 consecutive matches in CS2, which is the third-longest winning streak in Counter-Strike history.
Vitality continue charge for ESL Grand Slam in Liquid rout
So far in Melbourne, Vitality has found success effortlessly against their opponents FlyQuest and Liquid during the group stage. Today, they advanced to the playoffs without much struggle, starting off strong with a 13-5 victory on Liquid’s map choice, Mirage.
In a 13-8 victory against Nuke, Vitality demonstrated why they are revered by all. From a 2v5 situation led by Mathieu “ZywOo” Herbaut and Robin “ropz” Kool to ropz’s impressive solo 1v2 on the A bombsite, Vitality showcased their prowess in crucial rounds. In close situations, no other international team can match them.
In the match against Liquid, it wasn’t often that Vitality found themselves catching up; instead, Dan “apEX” Madesclaire’s team took the lead and maintained it effectively, preventing the North American squad from regaining ground in either a single round or the entire map.
18 consecutive series without a defeat is the current record for Vitality, stretching all the way back to IEM Katowice in February. Over this period they’ve managed an impressive 39 wins out of 45 maps played, with their only losses being against MOUZ (twice at BLAST Open Lisbon), MIBR, FaZe, The MongolZ, and Spirit.
If they manage to finish a flawless streak at the ESL Grand Slam, they’ll secure their 21st consecutive series victory – only two shy of Liquid’s record from 2018 and 2019. The all-time record of 60 uninterrupted wins, currently held by Ninjas in Pyjamas from the early days of CS:GO, is unlikely to be surpassed.
Despite falling short of matching Liquid’s record in Melbourne, Vitality remains fixated on the trophy and it will be tough for their opponents to deter them. Tomorrow, they face the winner of the clash between Falcons and NaVi in the playoff seeding game.
