RecipeTin Eats cookbook author Nagi Maehashi breaks silence on Erin Patterson trial after mushroom killer used her recipe to make deadly beef Wellington in murder plot

Nagi Maehashi has voiced her thoughts following the disclosure that her Beef Wellington recipe was employed by the convicted murderer, Erin Patterson, in a gruesome crime scheme.

In the year 2023, it was determined on a Monday that Patterson had committed murder by using deadly death cap mushrooms in a beef Wellington dish she prepared for lunch, which they tragically consumed.

On Tuesday, Chef Maehashi expressed regret that the very dish she crafted to spread ‘joy and delight’ among people became the focal point of an appalling murder case and its ensuing court proceedings.

In the year 2022, Maehashi’s Beef Wellington was featured in the ‘Dinner’ edition of her RecipeTin Eats collection.

In a recent Instagram Story post on Tuesday, the chef expressed his distress upon discovering that one of his cherished recipes, likely the one he’s dedicated more time refining than any other, a creation intended to bring delight and cheer, has become embroiled in this heartbreaking predicament.

Maehashi specifically targeted his comment towards Australian journalists, and surprisingly included a red-and-white mushroom emoji in it.

As a die-hard admirer, I can’t help but share my findings: Among the crime scene photographs submitted to the Supreme Court of Victoria was a snapshot of Patterson’s cherished copy of the RecipeTin Eats cookbook, left open on a counter with a specific section marked as a favorite.

In another version of the Beef Wellington recipe, Patterson crafted a dish with a dangerous twist. He substituted deadly death cap mushrooms into the original recipe.

The woman with two children denied her involvement in the killings of Don and Gail Patterson, as well as Gail’s sister, Heather Wilkinson.

On July 29, 2023, they tragically passed away following the consumption of deadly mushrooms (death caps) hidden within a Beef Wellington during lunch at Patterson’s residence in Leongatha, southeast Victoria.

Only Pastor Ian Wilkinson was the sole survivor of the plot against him, an error that Patterson would come to rue severely, as he has been sentenced to serve time for not only his crimes but also for attempting to take Pastor Wilkinson’s life.

In response to being asked for their decision, the head juror, who was one of just five women among the initial group of fifteen, succinctly declared, ‘We find him guilty.’

In the crowded courtroom, the verdict elicited a noticeable gasp from those present, among them being members of the Patterson family.

A few weeks ago, Maehashi caused a stir worldwide when she accused TikTok sensation and co-cookbook writer Brooke Bellamy of copying her work.

On her website and social media platforms, Maehashi asserted that the debut cookbook by Brooki (Bake With Brooki) contained two recipes strikingly similar to hers – the caramel slice and baklava.

Maehashi claimed that Penguin Australia, the publisher of Bellamy’s cookbook, used her work without obtaining necessary permissions first.

Maehashi asserted that the resemblances were so precise and intricate that it seemed insincere to label them as mere coincidences.

As a die-hard fan, let me tell you that I’ve come across recipes from various writers whose resemblance is strikingly close. To chalk it up to mere coincidence seems preposterous in my book.

Maehashi said she felt compelled to speak out against the publishing giant.

‘Staying silent protects this kind of behaviour,’ she said.

Bellamy has vehemently denied the accusations.
