Reboot of ’80s BBC detective drama confirms 2025 release date

As a hardcore fan of ’80s BBC dramas and someone who grew up glued to the television screen during the golden age of British television, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and nostalgia about the upcoming reboot of Bergerac. The original series was a staple in my household, and I remember staying up late to catch each episode, enchanted by the island life and intrigued by the mysteries that detective Jim Bergerac unraveled.

The reboot of ’80s BBC drama Bergerac has been given a 2025 release window.

The announcement has been made that the revival will air on U&Drama and U’s streaming service (previously known as UKTV Play) starting in February. Additionally, a fresh teaser trailer was also released.

The video presents the latest Bergerac character, portrayed by Damien Molony known from “Being Human” and “Brassic”, who struggles with ghosts from his sorrowful past as a disillusioned detective. In addition, there are numerous scenes of waves violently hitting the rugged coastline for added impact.

Additionally, you’ll catch fleeting appearances from actors like Zoë Wanamaker from “My Family”, Philip Glenister known for “Ashes to Ashes”, and Robert Gilbert hailing from “Big Boys”.

Initially, we encounter Jim Bergerac, a man grappling with personal struggles following the loss of his spouse, who is taking a break to confront his inner turmoil.

However, when a wealthy family member in Jersey meets an untimely end, the Chief of Police Uma Dalal (Sasha Behar) insists on having their top detective handle the case. Bergerac comes out of retirement to aid him and regain his former glory as a formidable detective. At the same time, he strives to reassure his daughter Kim (Sweetlove) and mother-in-law Charlie Hungerford (Wanamaker) that he has gotten back on the right track with his life.

The Wakefield family, headed by their father and entrepreneur Arthur (Glenister), maintain tight-lipped secrecy, while an old acquaintance from Bergerac’s past emerges with startling allegations. Can Bergerac handle it all?

The six-part series offers a touch of reunion from the world of “Being Human,” since its creator, Toby Whithouse, is among the writers, alongside Catherine Tregenna known for “Torchwood,” Brian Fillis from “Sirens,” and Polly Buckle of “A Discovery of Witches.” Colm McCarthy, director of “Peaky Blinders,” takes charge of the action as the director.

The Bergerac reboot will air on U&Drama in February 2025.
