Rebecca Maddern shares emotional farewell as she exits Channel Seven role amid shakeup: ‘I’m very proud’
As a dedicated follower of media and sports journalism, I can’t help but feel a sense of admiration for Rebecca Maddern‘s career trajectory. Her journey from a young sports reporter at Triple M to becoming Channel Seven’s chief sports presenter is nothing short of inspiring.
Rebecca Maddern is moving on from her weekend role as Channel Seven’s news anchor.
In 2025, she plans to remain within the organization and advance her career, eventually securing a prominent position at 7News.
It was officially announced last month that the well-known sports commentator will take on the role of Seven’s lead sports anchor.
On Sunday, the 47-year-old bid farewell to her old gig in an emotional post to Instagram.
3 years ago, she started working on weekends to bring you the latest news at 6pm on @7news, and now her shift has ended – that’s a wrap!
Working with @mikeoz7, @abbeygelmi, and @soniamarinelli has been an absolute blast! I’m incredibly proud of the product we’ve brought to life on-air.
There are numerous individuals such as producers, directors, journalists, teleprompter operators, and makeup artists whom I am grateful to for dedicating their Saturdays and Sundays alongside me.
To everyone who’s been tuning in, a heartfelt thanks for your company! This team is truly exceptional. As for me, I won’t be going too far – I’ll still be right here at the same desk, just switching chairs starting from 2025, continuing to lead our fantastic sports team Monday through Friday.
‘Thank you to my wonderful weekend team. Merry Christmas and have a happy and safe New Year’.
Rebecca won’t be traveling too far – instead, she will be taking on a new role where she will deliver the nightly sports news for Channel 7 in Melbourne.
She shared with the Herald Sun that throughout her career, she has been involved in both sports and news, and interestingly enough, her initial professional role was in the field of sports at Triple M when she was still quite young.
‘This role is really a great fit for me. Sport gives you a chance to get out of the office a little bit more, travel, connect with sports fans, which I love, so the role is very appealing across the board. I am really looking forward to it,’ Maddern continued.
Over the course of my career in media, I’ve had the good fortune to take on a variety of roles. Each new role offers me the excitement to be rejuvenated and draw upon the wealth of knowledge I’ve accumulated over the years.
Maddern was the co-presenter of 7News at 6pm on weekends alongside Mike Amor.
She will shift from the role on weekends to reading sports from Monday to Friday.
Karina Carvalho, the latest addition to our network from ABC, could be a strong contender for filling in Maddern’s weekend hosting position.
Following a significant reorganization at Channel Seven, whispers suggest that some of its well-known news and current affairs personalities are being watched closely by competing networks.
After Sharnelle Vella, a prominent state political reporter, unexpectedly left for ABC Radio Melbourne, rival media outlets are noticing that some of the newsroom’s most skilled journalists might be available for recruitment, as reported by the Herald Sun.
As a lifestyle expert, I’m here to share insights, and based on recent reports, it seems we can expect an uptick in recruitment activities within the celebrity sphere in the upcoming days. Keep your eyes peeled for potential moves!
These assertions surface during the significant transformations happening in the Seven newsroom, notably following Tim Watson’s announcement of his retirement, marking the end of his 30-year tenure with the network.
Daily Mail Australia has contacted Channel Seven for comment.
This adjustment follows the occasion where Kerry Stokes, Seven’s manager, entertained some prominent 7News personalities at his luxurious waterfront residence in Darling Point.
At the gathering, there were notable figures such as Liam Bartlett, who is known for his work in Spotlight, along with weekend anchors Michael Usher and Angie Asimus from 7News Sydney.
Watson revealed on the evening broadcast on Monday that he will be leaving 7News Melbourne soon, having been associated with Channel Seven for almost thirty years.
At the outset, anchor Peter Mitchell expressed: “Just a moment before wrapping up, Tim, you have some exclusive news of your own.
Absolutely, Mitch. By the end of December, I will be wrapping things up. I’ll be working quite close to Christmas. In fact, it’s nearly three decades that I’ve been working here, Watson noted.
‘I’ve enjoyed every moment of it. Love working alongside you, but all good things come to an end.’
Later, Watson took to socials to expand on his brief farewell.
Watson expressed that they’ve had an outstanding experience working on the most wonderful job at a network that has consistently shown great support.
As an over-the-moon sports enthusiast, it’s been an honor and a joy to join your households each day, working alongside diligent and gifted professionals who tirelessly craft top-notch news broadcasts. I feel blessed to be part of this team that brings the latest sports updates right into your living rooms.
After another round of changes at the network, it was announced that the seasoned broadcaster has decided to switch allegiances, as Sharnelle Vella revealed her unexpected move to the ABC.
This week, our political reporter announced to her superiors in the newsroom that she will be leaving for a national broadcasting company at the end of this month, providing them with just a few weeks to find someone to fill her position.
This declaration comes after her notable guesting on Seven’s prime investigative show, Spotlight, in August, during which she managed to obtain an exclusive chat with the troubled ex-head of CFMEU, John Setka.
For the well-known broadcaster, after nearly a decade with the network, the plan is to bid farewell to her team and acquaintances during the upcoming weeks. After a relaxing summer break, she will commence her new position at ABC Radio Melbourne.
The switch involves partnering Bob Murphy, a previous captain of the Western Bulldogs, with her in revamping the morning program. This replaces Sammy J (Samuel Jonathan McMillan), the outgoing host, who announced his exit on Wednesday.
