Rebecca Kutler named president of MSNBC
Rebecca Kutler has been appointed as the permanent president for MSNBC, the cable news network owned by Comcast, following her temporary tenure in the role.
On Wednesday, it was announced by Mark Lazarus, the Comcast executive overseeing the planned separation of a new company that encompasses MSNBC and other cable networks, that Kutler had been appointed.
During Rebecca’s brief tenure as interim president, it became evident to me that she possesses a comprehensive strategic perspective and the necessary leadership abilities to guarantee MSNBC upholds its brand commitment while also preparing for expansion during a period of sector transformation,” Lazarus wrote in a memo to the network’s staff.

Since Vice President Kamala Harris’s loss in the 2024 presidential election against former President Trump on November 5, there has been a significant drop in viewers for MSNBC, a channel owned by Comcast. In comparison to the first ten months of the year, the viewership has decreased by approximately 46%.
After President Trump’s re-election in November, MSNBC experienced a significant drop in viewership. However, the audience has been gradually coming back. Notably, prime-time anchor Rachel Maddow resumed her daily show following a period of weekly appearances and special coverage that lasted for about two years.
In the year 2022, Kutler took on the position of Senior Vice President for Content Strategy at MSNBC. Following the recent exit of Rashida Jones, she assumed the presidency within the company.
Earlier on, Kutler worked for 12 years at CNN, taking charge of their live shows and contributing to the creation of CNN+’s brief online streaming platform.
Kutler will take charge of guiding the network towards a future where the pay TV industry is dwindling – a significant factor behind Comcast’s decision to separate MSNBC. Although it remains profitable, MSNBC and other cable networks reliant on pay TV subscription fees are facing an uncertain future as this income stream diminishes.
