Monkeys might die in incredibly imaginative ways, but their depictions are unlikely to be praised for their authenticity.
As a devoted horror-comedy enthusiast, I’m excited to share that I recently watched a chilling film adaptation of Stephen King’s 1980 short story. This thrilling tale centers around twin brothers, Hal and Bill Shelburne, portrayed by the talented Theo James. Their tranquil lives take an unexpected turn when they encounter a menacing toy monkey with a knack for mayhem.
After its premiere on Friday, many viewers and reviewers have pointed out the film’s humor in depicting elaborate death sequences. James and director Osgood Perkins seemed to enjoy themselves as they watched these scenes with actual morticians, as reported by Neon.

One of the experts chuckled, commenting on an unusually funny multiple-step electric execution, “That’s absolutely absurd!” he said, “I’ve never witnessed anything like that myself, but I guess there’s always a first time for everything.
Among the various bizarre and grim fatalities, such as an incident with a panicked horse and swarming bees, were observed, with someone humorously commenting that these events “somewhat” held a hint of realism.
While The Monkey is often associated with its fatalities, James exclusively disclosed to Digital Spy that his dual part presented numerous difficulties. He elaborated, “Hal is essentially an internal character – a damaged man, yet he serves as the moral core of the movie.

Later, it’s revealed that Bill is essentially a 10-year-old mind trapped in an adult body, leading to his unconventional behavior. Oz and I went all out with their development, but particularly for Bill, we aimed to make him both entertaining yet somewhat chaotic and madcap.
It’s peculiar to act against your instincts since you’re not performing in the moment, but rather premeditating and considering your actions. You shouldn’t over-plan to maintain authenticity, but you must strategize the potential consequences before you execute.
The Monkey is in cinemas now.
