Britani Bateman, from The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, accompanied her niece to an American Idol audition and seemed surprised by the judges’ responses.
At 54, Bateman seemed a bit disappointed when the judges – Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, and Lionel Richie – didn’t recognize her name. They appeared genuinely confused when she told them who she was.
The situation began when the TV star arrived with her niece, Carmen Lorell Martin, for an audition on Monday’s episode of the talent show.
Bateman, who has a protective order against her ex-husband – he was arrested in December for reportedly breaking it – signaled for quiet by tapping a wine glass with a knife.
She declared: ‘I have an announcement!’
Bryan very politely said, ‘What’s the announcement?’
‘This is my niece,’ Bateman said before launching into a high-pitched singing voice, ‘ Carmelita.’
After an awkward pause, Bateman asked the judges, ‘Do you know me? I’m Britani. Britain Bateman.’
The judges remained silent, so Martin attempted to prompt them, suggesting, ‘Real Housewives of Salt Lake City.’
“This isn’t about me,” Bateman interrupted. “It’s about my incredible niece, who you’re about to meet. You won’t believe how talented she is.”
From the bench, the judge told Bateman to step aside and let his niece have the attention.
Martin assured the judges that her aunt was there as her mentor.
Britani has always encouraged me to pursue my own goals and put myself out there. She’s successfully achieving her dreams, and that inspires me to follow mine as well,” the singer shared.
Bateman got emotional when her niece sang Ty Myers’ Thought It Was Love.
Martin’s performance pleased the judges, with Underwood complimenting her beautiful voice and vocal range. However, Underwood also suggested she could benefit from adding more energy and power to her singing.
Eva Bateman, known for playing Ellen in the 1999 touring production of Miss Saigon, didn’t want to just be a spectator; she wanted to be involved.
She joined her niece singing Let Me Be Your Star from Smash.
Despite her aunt trying to intervene, Martin earned a golden ticket and will be competing during Hollywood Week.
In September 2024, Heather Bateman made her first appearance on The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City as a friend of the cast during the season five premiere.
On the show, her character’s storylines focused on her romance with Jared Osmond, who is related to Donny and Marie Osmond.
Jared and I have been dating for about eight months, and we’ve broken up and gotten back together sixteen times, I think,” Bateman shared with the women.
At the start of season six, Bateman filled the women in on what was happening with their complicated relationship.
‘I have an announcement,’ she began, using her now-familiar line.
She shared that she and Osmond got engaged in December 2024, but they broke up just two weeks later.
Bateman explained to her co-stars during a camping trip that they had changed their minds because their children weren’t enthusiastic about something, and they really wanted their kids to be involved.
The reality star explained that their relationship was inconsistent last year, which caused problems. Ultimately, they decided to end things. She shares two daughters with her ex-husband, John Underwood, and their relationship since the divorce has been difficult.
