‘Reacher’s Pile of Source Material Presents a Strange Problem

The Reacher series has already proven more popular than the two Reacher movies starring Tom Cruise from the last decade, and Amazon seems eager to continue making it for a long time. That’s fantastic news, and the show is well-positioned for a potentially very long run. However, while this long-term commitment is generally a positive, some might see it as a potential drawback if they’re looking at it negatively.

I recently read an interview with Jennifer Salke, the head of Amazon Studios, and she pretty much confirmed what fans are hoping for: Alan Ritchson will continue playing Jack Reacher for as long as he wants! She told The Hollywood Reporter back in 2024 that there are no plans to end the series with him in the lead – she’s hoping for many, many more seasons. Ritchson himself has echoed that sentiment, saying he’s committed to the show for the long haul. As we get ready for Season 4, it’s fantastic to hear this, but honestly, it also makes me a little sad to think about a world without new Reacher episodes eventually!

‘Reacher’ Has a Huge Advantage Not Many Other Shows Have

I’m a huge Jack Reacher fan, and it’s awesome seeing the books come to life! The show is based on Lee Child’s novels, and each season tackles a different one. They’ve made a few changes here and there to fit the TV format, but honestly, they’ve stayed pretty true to the stories – just like the Tom Cruise movies did. It’s exciting because Lee Child just released his 30th Reacher book in November 2025! Even with the six books that have been adapted so far, there are still a ton of adventures waiting to be made into a show or movie!

As a huge TV fan, I’ve noticed something that’s been happening a lot lately: book adaptations. It’s not a new trend, of course – they’ve been doing it forever! But with streaming booming, it feels like everything is getting turned into a show. The problem is, when an adaptation gets really popular, the showrunners eventually run out of book material. We’ve seen it with shows like Dexter, Game of Thrones, You, and Wayward Pines – they had to start making up their own stories. And honestly, while it’s not always terrible when they move beyond the source material, it often leads to a noticeable drop in quality. It’s a tricky balance!

Look, as a total movie fanatic, I feel like I have to dive into as many book adaptations as I possibly can. But it’s more than just a passion project, you know? I also feel a real responsibility to the people who believed in me early on – the ones who took a chance when I was a total unknown. They really gave me my career, and I want to honor that by giving it my all.

– Alan Ritchson on playing Jack Reacher

Fortunately, the Reacher TV series doesn’t have to worry about running out of stories. Most TV shows don’t last for 20 seasons or more, which would happen if they used up all the original books. Plus, new Jack Reacher books are still being published. While Lee Child no longer writes them, his brother, Andrew Child, has taken over the writing duties. This means the Prime Video show will always have plenty of material to work with, and any original storylines for Alan Ritchson’s character will be intentional creative choices, not forced by a lack of source material.

The Downside of ‘Reacher’s Huge Pile of Literary Source Material

Prime Video

While it’s fantastic that there are so many Jack Reacher books, it means the Prime Video series won’t be able to adapt them all. A lot of great stories will likely remain unadapted, which is a shame because not everyone enjoys reading. The Reacher show is introducing these stories to a wider audience, but many viewers will miss out on some of the more explosive plots from the books. Imagining Reacher continuing for 30 seasons is fun, but realistically, it’s unlikely to happen.

The series has subtly hinted at events from Jack Reacher’s past. There have been quick lines and short conversations suggesting that things which happened in some of the books – like the stories from One Shot and Never Go Back (previously adapted into movies starring Tom Cruise) – occurred for Ritchson’s Reacher before the show’s timeline began. This probably prevents the series from simply retelling the movie plots, but it also opens the door for adapting more of the books in a similar way, referencing past events instead of directly recreating them.

Nick Santora, the creator of the Reacher series, might choose to adapt only the Jack Reacher novels that fit his overall story arc. The books are generally standalone adventures, but the Prime Video series is building a more continuous, ongoing narrative. This means some novels might not work well with Santora’s plans, and he may decide to end the series when it feels natural. If that happens, there will still be plenty of books left to adapt if Reacher is ever rebooted in the future.

The Upcoming ‘Reacher’ Spin-off Has the Opposite Challenge to Its Parent Show

Prime Video

Maria Sten’s character, Frances Neagley, has become a key part of the Reacher series. Interestingly, the TV version of Neagley has appeared in more storylines than she does in the original Lee Child books. While Neagley only appears in a few of the novels, and only one of those has been adapted for Prime Video so far, she’s become so popular that she’s getting her own spin-off show, Neagley, which is planned to debut in 2026.

Although there’s still some unexplored material for the Neagley character, there’s considerably less than what’s available for Reacher. If the Neagley spin-off relies on the existing books, it will likely need to create new storylines to keep the show going. It’s also possible the spin-off will be entirely original, allowing the main Reacher series to stay more closely tied to the books. It remains to be seen how the Reacher franchise will develop in this way over time.
