Titus Welliver is coming back as Bosch in season two of Ballard. While fans will be happy to see him return, it highlights a missed chance for the Prime Video series – something the Reacher spinoff featuring Neagley did successfully.
It’s been a long time since Bosch finished airing on Prime Video, and nothing else has quite captured the same thrilling atmosphere. While the spin-off, Ballard, successfully established itself, it also brought back Titus Welliver as Harry Bosch with a cameo appearance in its first season.
The second season of Ballard will bring back Titus Welliver as Bosch, which is exciting news for fans. However, his return also highlights a potential issue with the show’s approach – one that the Reacher series appears to be successfully avoiding.
Titus Welliver’s Confirmed Return In Ballard Season 2 Feels Bittersweet
Titus Welliver’s quick appearance in the first season of Ballard was a nice nod to the existing Bosch world. His return in season 2 will do the same, reminding audiences of his important contribution to the franchise’s success.
However, bringing Bosch back sometimes feels unnatural and emphasizes that the series doesn’t have the same strong core it once had when the original books were first adapted.
Fans are excited for season 2 of Ballard and the return of Titus Welliver. But seeing him as Harry Bosch also reminds viewers that the original Bosch series is over and unlikely to come back anytime soon. Because Ballard centers on a different main character, Bosch appears much less frequently in this new series.
It’s easy to miss Bosch when the spin-off takes over, and you find yourself wishing the original series was still the focus. However, Ballard is a strong show on its own, and the second season looks promising too.
Since Bosch: Legacy ended after just three seasons without resolving all storylines, many viewers still want a satisfying conclusion for Harry Bosch. His brief cameos in Ballard haven’t been enough to provide that closure.
The new Bosch prequel, Start of Watch, will probably leave viewers feeling the same way as with Ballard: it explores a significant part of Harry Bosch’s life, but won’t star the actor most fans think of when they picture the character.
Bosch Ended Before Ballard Started Thriving, But Reacher & Neagley Are Growing Together
The Bosch series concluded before Ballard began, making the two shows feel distinct rather than connected. While Bosch characters appear in Ballard, offering some continuity, Ballard largely stands on its own. Fortunately, the Reacher franchise is handling things differently and maintaining a more unified feel.
Both the Neagley spinoff and Reacher season 4 are set to release in 2026.
The new series focusing on Neagley is expected to premiere before season four of Reacher. Similar to the Ballard series, Jack Reacher will appear in a supporting role. However, unlike Ballard, the Neagley spinoff will directly set up the events for the next season of Reacher.
Bringing Jack Reacher back for a new series is particularly exciting because it will lay the groundwork for future team-ups with Neagley and connect the storylines of the different Reacher shows.
Jack Reacher’s appearance in the upcoming Neagley spin-off won’t just be a brief nod to the past, like Titus Welliver’s role in Ballard. Instead, it will be a key part of the story, setting up future adventures for both Reacher and Neagley.
This strategy lets both Reacher and Neagley develop their stories while also building out the larger franchise. The successful Prime Video series with Bosch and Ballard could have done this too, but unfortunately didn’t take that path.
