is set to break a major Reacher tradition.
The popular Prime Video series Reacher, based on Lee Child’s books, is getting a spinoff called Neagley. This new show will focus on Frances Neagley, played by Maria Sten, as she investigates a perilous and complex case.
Showrunners Nick Santora and Nick Wootton recently spoke with EW about the upcoming Neagley series. They explained that, unlike Reacher which features a fresh cast and setting each season, Neagley will be set primarily in one location and feature recurring supporting characters. Here’s what Santora had to say:
The biggest difference in creating the show about Neagley compared to Reacher was building a lasting world and team. With Reacher, each season takes place in a new location – like Georgia or Maine – and the supporting characters and storylines reset each time. For Neagley, we needed to develop a world and characters that viewers would really connect with and want to see continue across many seasons, because unlike Reacher, Neagley isn’t someone who just moves on to the next adventure. That was the core challenge and the biggest shift in our approach.
Beyond having a consistent team around her, the Neagley series will also delve into its main character in a way that differs from Reacher. While part of what made the original show appealing was Jack Reacher – played by Alan Ritchson – being somewhat of a mysterious figure, the spinoff will give viewers a deeper look at Sten’s protagonist.
One character was explored with a lot of psychological depth, while the other—Reacher—is intentionally simple. Reacher’s motivations are straightforward; he’s not a complex person, which is part of his appeal. He basically wants good food and to fight when necessary. Neagley, in contrast, has much more inner complexity.
Season 2 of Neagley hasn’t been officially announced yet. However, the creators, Santora and Wootton, are definitely setting things up for a potential spinoff series that could last for many seasons. With Reacher season 4 arriving on Prime Video on August 16th, Neagley could have a similar opportunity for a long-running show.
However, whether Neagley achieves the same popularity as Reacher will depend on several things, but viewership will be key. Reacher has consistently drawn a large audience for Prime Video, and it’s clear that Ritchson’s portrayal of the strong, action-packed hero has connected with viewers.
Season 3 of Reacher broke Prime Video records, racking up 54.6 million views in just nineteen days. While the new series Neagley probably won’t reach those numbers – it’s a spinoff and doesn’t have novels to base its story on – it still has the potential to be very popular.
A positive for the new series is that Reacher star Alan Ritchson appears in it as well. The cast also features Greyston Holt, John Bregar, Lars A. Melby, Rebecca Liddiard, and Ema Ines, alongside Ritchson and Bruce Sten.
The series Reacher has been a critical success with a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which creates high expectations for its new spinoff, Neagley. Good news for fans: Reacher is confirmed to return for a fifth season. Although it’s still unclear if Neagley will live up to the original show’s success, the popularity of the Reacher universe shows no signs of fading.
Neagley is scheduled to premiere on Prime Video on September 16.
