There’s plenty to look forward to in next year’s “Avengers: Doomsday”. The highly anticipated Marvel film promises a huge gathering of superheroes, yet what truly grips fans is the appearance of the villain.

Robert Downey Jr., the man who launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Iron Man, is set to return as Doctor Doom. While it’s far from clear exactly what role the character will play, we can be sure he will be doing some serious damage to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and some cool fan art recently posted to Instagram gives us a pretty remarkable view of just what that might look like. In a dominating stance, Doctor Doom towers over the fallen heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, their bodies scattered around him. The presence of Mr. Fantastic, extended limply in Doctor Doom’s grasp, seems apt given their storied past in the comic book universe. Notably, an Ant-Man helmet looms in the backdrop, now enlarged to Giant-Man scale, possibly hinting at how it came to rest in the Void as depicted in Deadpool & Wolverine.

In many MCU films, villains have been criticized as underdeveloped, but the choice to cast Robert Downey Jr., suggests that there may be plans in motion for characters like Doctor Doom or others. Given that Doctor Doom is one of Marvel’s most iconic villains, having a well-known actor portray him increases anticipation, implying that these plans could be substantial.

It’s plausible that the final product in “Avengers: Doomsday” could resemble this quite closely. Many characters you see on the ground are part of the officially announced cast for “Doomsday”. There seems to be a strong possibility of a scene where Doctor Doom overpowers the heroes. The intriguing aspect is, when exactly will that occur?

The last two Avengers films were essentially chapters of the same larger narrative. It’s uncertain at this point how connected the upcoming film will be to this continuity. While it’s likely that “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Secret Wars” will be linked, the specifics remain unclear. Will the final movie in the series leave Doctor Doom victorious like “Infinity War”, or will “Doomsday” serve as a self-contained story that leads directly into “Avengers: Secret Wars”?
