Razzies Announce Nominees For Worst Movies of 2024
Without a doubt, the Razzie Awards are the leading authority in recognizing less-than-stellar films. As is customary, they reveal their yearly nominations just prior to the Academy Awards disclosing their choices. And here we have it – the Razzie nominees for 2024!
Without much surprise, the list is primarily ruled by two films: Madame Web – a contender for multiple Razzie Awards including Worst Picture, Worst Actress (Dakota Johnson), Worst Supporting Actor (Tahar Rahim), Worst Supporting Actress (Emma Roberts), Worst Director (S.J. Clarkson), and Worst Screenplay; and Joker: Folie a Deux – also vying for various Razzies such as Worst Picture, Worst Actor (Joaquin Phoenix, who previously won an Oscar for the same role), Worst Actress (Lady Gaga), Worst Director (Todd Phillips), Worst Onscreen Combo, Worst Screenplay, Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off, or Sequel.
In other words, both movies were nominated for almost every single award.
Notable contenders also include the game “Borderlands,” which received several award nominations including one for Worst Film, and Francis Ford Coppola’s self-funded endeavor “Megalopolis,” which was nominated for Worst Film as well as a Worst Director nod for Coppola.
In my view, Megalopolis was chaotic at times, yet it showcased immense ambition. It had a unique perspective and plenty to ponder upon. Unlike Megalopolis, Madame Web felt more like a half-baked attempt rather than a movie. It seemed to be an effort by Sony to milk their Spider-Man intellectual property in any conceivable way, without any apparent narrative justification.
However, that’s typical of the Razzies’ approach. They blend genuinely awful movies and performances with sarcastic jabs. Instead of selecting two subpar performances in Jerry Seinfeld’s Unfrosted, they nominated it for Worst Onscreen Combo as a joke. Similarly, they nominated Kraven the Hunter (a poorly made film) for Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-off or Sequel, despite it not fitting any of those categories. This is simply their style, and it’s something they’ve always done.
2024’s Razzie Award nominees have been unveiled! The grand winner will be revealed a day prior to the Oscars, which is scheduled for March 1st, right here in sunny Los Angeles.
Worst Picture
Borderlands
Joker: Folie a Deux
Madame Web
Megalopolis

Jack Black is considered the worst actor, starring in “Dear Santa.”
Zachary Levi appeared in “Harold and the Purple Crayon.”
Joaquin Phoenix played the role in “Joker: Folie a Deux.”
Dennis Quaid took on the role of Ronald Reagan.
Jerry Seinfeld was featured in “Unfrosted.
Nominees for Worst Actress:
Cate Blanchett, in the film Borderlands
Lady Gaga, in the film Joker: Folie a Deux
Bryce Dallas Howard, in the film Argylle
Dakota Johnson, in the film Madame Web
Jennifer Lopez, in the film Atlas
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I must express my thoughts on the most underwhelming supporting performances of recent times. Among them, Jack Black in “Borderlands” left me feeling less than satisfied. Similarly, Kevin Hart’s role in the same film didn’t resonate with me as expected.
Moving on to other productions, Shia LaBeouf in “Megalopolis” fell short of my expectations. Tahar Rahim, in “Madame Web”, delivered a performance that I found lackluster when compared to his previous works. Lastly, Jon Voight’s appearances in “Megalopolis,” “Reagan,” “Shadow Land,” and “Strangers” were not up to par with the caliber of acting he’s known for.
In the category of Best Supporting Actress for upcoming films:
– Ariana DeBose in “Argylle” and “Kraven the Hunter”
– Leslie Anne Down in “Reagan”
– Emma Roberts in “Madame Web”
– Amy Schumer in “Unfrosted”
– FKA twigs in “The Crow
The following directors have been linked to some of the most anticipated films with questionable directorial choices:
1. S.J. Clarkson for Madame Web
2. Francis Ford Coppola for Megalopolis
3. Todd Phillips for Joker: Folie a Deux
4. Eli Roth for Borderlands
5. Jerry Seinfeld for Unfrosted
This suggests that these films may face criticism or skepticism due to the directors’ previous work or the nature of the projects themselves.
Least Enjoyable Onscreen Pairings
1. Extremely Irritating Characters (Especially Jack Black), Borderlands
2. Two Unfunny Actors Claiming to Be Comedians, Unfrosted
3. The Entire Actor Lineup of Megalopolis

5. Dennis Quaid and Penelope Ann Miller in the Movie, Reagan

Good Movies That Won Razzie Awards
1. The Addams Family (1991)
In 1991, MC Hammer’s fame had arguably reached an overwhelming level, possibly explaining why he won the “Worst Original Song” Razzie for “Addams Groove.” As a child, I found this rap about the delightful Addams family quite enjoyable. Re-listening to it now after three decades, I must admit that my appreciation for it remains unchanged! It’s a shame that Barry Sonnenfeld’s charming and eccentric “The Addams Family” was linked to the Razzie Awards. Interestingly, the sequel, “Addams Family Values,” also received this award for “Addams Family (Whoomp!),” which, while perhaps not entirely undeserved… well, let’s just say it could be debated.
2. Beverly Hills Cop II
The Razzies often single out individuals or films that receive numerous nominations, regardless of their actual quality. For instance, Eddie Murphy has won five Razzies throughout his career, with many more nominations to add, not just for himself but also for his collaborative work. One such Razzie was awarded to the movie “Beverly Hills Cop II” for the song “I Want Your Sex,” which is famously known as a George Michael hit. However, the soundtrack of the film was successful regardless of the Razzies’ opinion – another song from the same film, “Shakedown” by Bob Segar, was even nominated for Best Original Song at the Golden Globes and Oscars. It’s possible that someone may have played a prank on the Razzie voters with a banana, leading them to hold a grudge.
3. The Blair Witch Project
Razzies Awards: Worst Actress Nomination for The Blair Witch Project
Let me clarify, one of the most innovative and impactful horror films ever made was up for two Razzie awards, including Worst Picture. Shockingly, it won a Razzie for Worst Actress! It’s quite remarkable how accurate that prediction was.
To be fair, The Blair Witch Project was a highly debated film when it first came out, and it seems Heather Donahue, the star, became the symbol of this massive cultural phenomenon due to her tearful apology scene to her friends’ parents. (Can you imagine if they had selfies back in 1999? The most iconic shot from The Blair Witch Project wouldn’t have happened.)
Nevertheless, even if one doesn’t appreciate The Blair Witch Project, it is hard to imagine considering Heather Donahue as having the worst performance of the entire year. (Her competition in 1999 included Melanie Griffith for Crazy in Alabama, Milla Jovovich for The Messenger, Sharon Stone for Gloria, and Catherine Zeta-Jones for Entrapment and The Haunting.) She and her co-stars were so convincing, some viewers genuinely believed the movie was a real documentary!
4. Freddy Got Fingered
Titled “Razzie Awards: Worst Movie Honors,” the film “Freddy Got Fingered” was not universally appreciated when it transitioned from Tom Green’s MTV series to a major motion picture deal at Fox. The renowned film critic, Roger Ebert, famously panned the movie, stating that it wasn’t even worth mentioning in the same sentence as barrels.
Consequently, the Razzie Awards were not alone in their dislike for the film, and it garnered numerous nominations along with five wins, including the top honor of Worst Picture. In my opinion, “Freddy” effectively translates Green’s unique brand of comedy into a grand prank on Hollywood and any audience willing to endure a movie named “Freddy Got Fingered.” As a traditional Hollywood gross-out comedy, “Freddy Got Fingered” is borderline catastrophic. However, as a deliberate attempt to provoke the audience, it can be considered a hidden masterpiece.
5. Heaven’s Gate
In this rephrased text, I’ve attempted to make the language more natural and easy to read while preserving the original meaning:
Razzie Awards Win: Worst Director
Michael Cimino, fresh from his Oscar-winning success with the Vietnam War film The Deer Hunter, embarked on an even more ambitious project – a sweeping Western based on the actual Johnson County War. Cimino’s pursuit of perfection has become legendary; when a street set didn’t meet his expectations (with buildings too close together), it is said that he ordered the entire structure to be demolished and rebuilt, despite the fact that minor adjustments could have sufficed or he could have just adapted.
The pre-release hype of Heaven’s Gate as a financially extravagant production preceded its arrival at cinemas, where opening-night critics harshly criticized Cimino’s director’s cut. After a disastrous first week, United Artists withdrew the film and made alterations. By the time the Razzies held their annual vote, the movie was already infamous as a flop – an obvious target for ridicule. It received five nominations, including Worst Picture, with Cimino taking home the award for Worst Director – a decision that seems absurd in retrospect. While Least Fiscally Responsible Director might have been fitting, Worst Director? That’s questionable. Over time, newer generations of critics have rediscovered a beautiful Western filled with striking visuals and powerful performances from Kris Kristofferson and Christopher Walken.
6. Ishtar
Elaine May’s Disastrous Directorial Debut: The Notorious ‘Heaven’s Gate’ Parody”
The 1980s saw a flop, not called ‘Heaven’s Gate’, that was a playful take on Crosby-Hope Road pictures. This production, burdened by lofty expectations due to its problematic and costly production, often put director Elaine May, producer/star Warren Beatty, and actor Dustin Hoffman at odds with each other.
Given the tumultuous production, it was only a matter of time before the Razzies took notice. It could have garnered more awards had it not premiered in the same year as ‘Leonard Part 6’, a truly awful film starring Bill Cosby. Despite this stiff competition, Elaine May still managed to win the Razzie for Worst Director. This turn of events is so ludicrous, it seems like the plot of an Elaine May movie itself!
7. The Lone Ranger
Razzies Awarded: Worst Adaptation, Rehash, or Follow-up Film
To be precise, Disney’s The Lone Ranger wasn’t a remake, rehash, or sequel. (It was a film based on a popular character from radio and television.) However, it seems that this technicality didn’t deter people from taking potshots at another notorious flop at the box office. Disney invested more than $200 million in a cinematic adaptation of an almost forgotten Western, with Johnny Depp portraying a Native American mystic.
Before the Razzies, discussions about the film’s exorbitant budget became so intense they overshadowed the fact that director Gore Verbinski had crafted a summer blockbuster as a warning against unchecked capitalism; the enormous train that is central to the story also symbolizes how big business and technology can bulldoze over anything in their path. The film was nominated for Worst Picture, Worst Director, and Worst Actor for Johnny Depp, but only won an award in the category it barely qualified for. Such is life.
8. Mamma Mia!
Razzie Awarded: Worst Supporting Actor in Mamma Mia!
Mamma Mia!, a hit movie adapted from the popular Broadway musical with Abba’s beloved tunes, surprisingly received the Razzie for Pierce Brosnan as Worst Supporting Actor. Despite its success and a sequel featuring many of the original cast members, Brosnan was honored by the Razzies in this category.
The reason behind this unusual recognition was clear: Brosnan’s singing abilities were not top-notch for his role, which required him to sing. During the Razzie Awards ceremony, the hosts jokingly commented that Brosnan is an actor who should not sing and arguably did not sing in a role he should not have accepted. Personally, I find Brosnan’s singing endearing, and his dedication to the project enchanting. However, at the Razzies, as in ABBA’s music, the winner takes it all, making Brosnan the victor in this peculiar case.
9. Rocky IV
The Razzies Go for Sylvester Stallone in the 80s
The Razzie Awards, known for their penchant for repeatedly targeting certain individuals regardless of the quality of their recent work, have shown an exceptional fondness for nominating Sylvester Stallone for almost everything during the 1980s.
Admittedly, there were instances when Stallone and his work deserved the Razzie treatment (such as the critically panned “Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot,” a movie that won three well-deserved Golden Raspberry Awards). However, I’m not entirely convinced that Sly was quite as deserving in the year he directed, wrote, and starred in both “Rambo: First Blood Part II” and “Rocky IV.” These films may not be his finest cinematic accomplishments, but they are undeniably crowd-pleasers and significant contributions to 1980s culture. The Razzies’ disdain for Stallone was so strong that they gave “Rocky IV” five Razzies, and it lost two other categories to “Rambo: First Blood Part II.” (Worst Picture and Worst Screenplay, which means James Cameron now has a Razzie Award. Incredible!)
10. Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith
Hayden Christensen, despite not deserving an Oscar for his role in “Revenge of the Sith,” was still awarded a Razzie for Worst Supporting Actor. This recognition came due to the fact that by the time of the Star Wars saga, the prequels had become a popular target for criticism, and the Razzies couldn’t resist taking a jab at Christensen’s performance in “Attack of the Clones.” The film “Revenge of the Sith” was generally considered superior to “Attack of the Clones,” and is often regarded as the best of the three Star Wars prequels.
