Raygun’s Lawyers Force Australian Musical About Viral Breaker to Leave Out Her Name

As a supporter of artistic freedom and creativity, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions regarding the saga of Rachael “Raygun” Gunn and the now rebranded “Breaking: The Musical.” On one hand, it’s heartening to see a comedian like Stephanie Broadbridge stand up for her craft and pursue her vision. On the other hand, I can’t help but feel for Rachael, who has been through so much since her controversial performance at the Paris Olympics.

In a bid to maintain grace amidst global jest and critique, Australian athlete Rachael “Raygun” Gunn, following her contentious display at the Paris Olympics, has endeavored to uphold sportsmanship.

But maybe “Raygun: the Musical” was a bridge too far.

Comedian Stephanie Broadbridge cancelled her performance that was due to start in Sydney only a few hours before it began, following threats of legal action from lawyers representing the comedian Gunn, who had targeted the venue hosting the comedy club.

As a movie reviewer, I’d rephrase it like this: “I recently shared with my social media audience that the legal team has secured the rights to the poster for the upcoming musical. Unfortunately, this means that the comedian can no longer perform the infamous kangaroo dance made famous by the viral Olympic athlete. It seems the rights to her iconic move are now in the hands of the Olympian herself.

37-year-old Sydney-based university teacher Gunn shared that the aftermath of her performance at the August Olympic breakdancing premiere left her feeling “heartbroken” and led to her decision to step away from competitions. Despite this, she expressed gratitude for the recognition she received from well-known comedians such as Jimmy Fallon. She mentioned, “I’m not ready to watch it just yet, but I will eventually.

On Thursday, Broadbridge shared some exciting news on Instagram about a change in their musical – it’s now called “Breaking: The Musical.” Their tagline is humorous: “A totally legal parody musical.” They’ve also released a fresh poster showcasing a kangaroo in Raygun’s iconic pose, adding a touch of humor to the new title.

On Thursday, Gunn announced on Instagram that her legal issues had been settled following an agreement reached with Broadbridge.

Gunn stated that she’s able to proceed with the musical, as she has a fresh title and new promotional materials. Moreover, she’ll be bringing this production on tour too. So, I’m genuinely thrilled for her and wish her nothing but success in both the show and the tour,” he expressed.

She denied reports that she’d sought a 10,000 Australian dollar ($6,230) payment for the use of her name.

We haven’t asked for reimbursement for anything related to this. Thus, much discussion revolves around the $10,000, which dates back to the very beginning – even on the first day, my legal team was representing me.

Previously, it was mentioned that Gunn’s legal team had requested that Anthony Skinner, the proprietor of the iD Comedy Club in Darlinghurst and the musical’s promoter, cover a minimum of $10,000 in legal expenses.

Skinner, intending to donate the earnings from the show to a women’s shelter in Sydney, proposed contributing $500, but it seems this offer was turned down. The media reported that Skinner was thrilled with the free publicity for his new production, which will be staged in Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney during the early months of next year.

In her social media post, Gunn clarified that her request to have her name taken off the musical wasn’t due to an inability to handle humor.

As a passionate advocate for creativity, I always make an effort to encourage it in any way I can. Seeing how my work has inspired such a diverse range of artistic expressions – from memes that are both cleverly witty and hilariously funny, to unique interpretations by fellow artists – truly fills me with joy.
