Raygun has her legal team shut down musical inspired by her breakdancing journey to the Olympics so she can protect her reputation
As a dedicated follower of artistic endeavors and having spent decades in the entertainment industry, I find this situation utterly disheartening. The tale of Steph Broadbridge’s ‘Breaking: The Musical,’ which aimed to pay homage to Raygun’s (Rachael Gunn) Olympic journey, is a testament to creativity, resilience, and the spirit of camaraderie in the arts.
Raygun’s legal team has shattered the anticipation of an Australian comedian, who was preparing to premier a musical about the breakdancer’s Olympic voyage.
Originally scheduled for performance at Kinselas in Darlinghurst, Sydney on Saturday at 7pm, the trial run of ‘Breaking: The Musical’ penned by and featuring Steph Broadbridge, has been called off. This decision was made following a cease-and-desist letter from lawyers representing Raygun, whose real name is Rachael Gunn.
The 90-minute program chronicles Ms. Gunn’s journey from gaining entry into, to showcasing her skills in, the breakdancing competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics. This event catapulted her to internet stardom with her unconventional dance moves such as contorting herself like a snake on the floor and leaping around like a kangaroo.
Ms. Gunn’s legal team is preparing to take action against the event organizer and host, aiming to safeguard her copyrighted works and preserve the power and prestige of her personal brand.
As a devoted supporter, I acknowledge and admire the exceptional work and dedication that has been poured into the creation of this show. However, it is crucial for us to act prudently and uphold Rachael’s creative liberties and the authenticity of her craft. This is the stance we are taking.
I’m not trying to undermine others’ efforts, but instead, I want to make sure that her brand is consistently portrayed correctly and securely in every future project.
On Saturday morning, comedian and musician Ms. Broadbridge announced via social media that the show scheduled for the same day was not happening as it had been ‘called off’, or ‘postponed indefinitely’.
She expressed concern that my actions might harm her reputation, but rest assured, I wouldn’t intentionally do such a thing… She doesn’t require my assistance for that purpose,” she stated.
According to Mr. Broadbridge, Ms. Gunn’s representatives terminated her show and also trademarked the promotional poster showing her portrayed as Raygun, which features her pose.
We received a warning from Raygun’s legal team about potential lawsuits, so we are returning the $10 or complimentary tickets to everyone,” she explained.
‘Her lawyers trademarked my poster, which is flattering. I hope they do something fun with that.’
According to Ms. Broadbridge, Ms. Gunn’s legal team expressed worries that people might mistakenly believe she was associated with the creation of the program.
In August, Ms. Gunn submitted an application to trademark ‘RAYGUN’, but since then, it has been under review due to a report published in October that prevented her claim from being approved.
Ms. Broadbridge made it clear that Ms. Gunn will not participate in the production, but she has extended an invitation for her to join if she wishes, in the future.
She was also told that she was not allowed to replicate one of Ms Gunn’s signature moves.
‘They said that I wasn’t allowed to do the dance because she owns the kangaroo dance.
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I must admit, that move left me utterly baffled. Frankly speaking, it’s on par with the grace and agility of Olympic dancers – a feat that seems out of reach for someone like myself who hasn’t had any formal breakdancing training.
As a die-hard admirer, I can’t help but share the thrilling news: On November 15, my idol, Ms. Gunn, successfully trademarked an iconic silhouette of her doing the kangaroo dance! It’s moments like these that make my fandom even more extraordinary!
Interestingly, the date for filing the second trademark application coincided with the day when Ms. Broadbridge initially announced her musical, which was September 25.
Moving ahead, Ms. Broadbridge affirmed that she plans to continue hosting the show. However, to eliminate any potential misunderstandings, she has decided to rename her character as ‘Raigun’.
News Flash: Initially, “The Musical” was marketed as a humorous examination tracing a breakdancer’s path towards the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The script had contained songs called ‘You May Be a B-girl But You’ll Always Be an A-girl To Me’ and ‘I’m Breaking Down’ along with the intriguing ‘I Would Have Won But I Pulled a Muscle’.
Ms. Gunn’s management, Born Bred Talent, stated that they became aware of the show when it might have misled the public into thinking [the musical] had Rachel’s support or blessing due to causing public confusion.
All proceeds from the event were set to be donated to the Women’s and Girl’s Emergency Center which helps disadvantaged women in Sydney’s inner city but will instead be refunded.
Ms Broadbridge said she intended to resume the show with adjustments in 2025.
Daily Mail Australia has contacted Born Bred Talent and Steph Broadbridge for comment.
