Ray Martin savagely mocks host Tim McDonald during appearance on The Cheap Seats

As an ardent admirer of Ray Martin, I must say that the man is nothing short of a living legend. His journey from the heights of journalism to exploring the depths of our mortal coil is nothing less than inspiring. At 79, he’s not just firing on all cylinders; he’s redefining what it means to be relevant and impactful in this ever-changing world.

Ray Martin was firing on all cylinders on Tuesday night.

The veteran journalist appeared on The Cheap Seats to discuss his SBS documentary series which explores cultural traditions surrounding death.

Tim McDonald joked about himself by saying, “I’ve been dead for eight minutes each week,” which means that his humor occasionally doesn’t resonate with audiences.

In a hushed tone, I mumbled something that slipped past most ears, but not yours, Tim. You heard me say, “I’ve died every week for eight minutes.” Now, what was your response to that intriguing statement?

‘I’ve noticed’ Ray quipped, to laughter from Tim, who added, ‘Thank you, Ray.’

After that, Ray joined the conversation, saying, “Perhaps, Tim, you might have a unique perspective on this matter since it’s been suggested that when one dies, their entire life appears to them in a flash.”

Tim’s chuckles grew louder as he found the playful remark amusing, understanding it exactly as intended.

As a lifestyle guide, I’m honored to be sharing my insights in the SBS three-part series titled “Ray Martin: The Last Goodbye.” In this compelling journey, we delve into the intricacies and taboo topics associated with our ultimate goodbye – death.

At the age of 79, Ray made a statement acknowledging that statistically, he’s just four years from his own end. However, he intends to infuse the program with his distinctive flair and humor during this time.

The show delves into diverse funeral traditions and customs, questioning the reasons behind preferred ceremonies, music, and burial sites, such as what influences these choices.

On the show, Martin plans to engage in conversation with several famous personalities, such as Gretel Killeen, an experienced host who is 61 years old, and the humorous Alex Lee.

At SBS, we aren’t afraid to delve into complex or sensitive topics when creating our content.

As a keen enthusiast, delving into the often overlooked topic of death – one of society’s final mysteries – feels like an exciting journey. And who else could guide us through this intriguing realm with wit, wisdom, and a touch of humor, but the esteemed Ray Martin?

Previously, Martin firmly expressed his belief that he has many more years ahead of him, while aging with elegance.

I have no plans for retirement; instead, I aim to follow the example of David Attenborough, who’s well into his 90s. His advice is to continue pursuing what you love, a sentiment he shared with Woman’s Day magazine.

He found that his former work-obsessed habits kept him from appreciating life’s essential moments, a situation he vowed never to reoccur.

For a decade, I resided in New York, serving as a correspondent for ABC, and I labored tirelessly for eight days every week. Despite this, my thoughts often wander to the experiences and opportunities I neglected during that time.

‘You’ve got forever to sleep, you’ve got to have a go.’

Instead of saying “The respected A Current Affair host added that, as he gets older, he is more committed than ever to spending time with his children Jenna and Luke and two grandchildren,” you could rephrase it as “As the A Current Affair host grows older, he’s increasingly dedicated to spending quality moments with his kids, Jenna and Luke, along with his precious grandkids.”

Ray Martin: The Last Goodbye will premiere on Wednesday, August 14 at 8.30pm on SBS and SBS On Demand and will continue on the following two Wednesdays at the same time.
