Rare Porsche 911 GT2 R Surfaces for Auction

RM Sotheby’s presents a unique opportunity to own one of only ten Porsche 911 GT2 R race cars produced in 1997. Originally painted Glacier White, this 993-generation GT2 R initially belonged to Dutch driver René Snel and later was owned by Klaus Abbelen, a renowned GT champion and founder of Frikadelli Racing.

Starting from intense racing sessions in the late ’90s, until a collision in 1999 that necessitated a change of chassis to a fresh body, this vehicle made its comeback in the early 2000s under Abbelen’s ownership. It contested races at Nürburgring, Hockenheim, and Monza during this period. In 2014, it was bought by The Stuttgart Legends Collection, and later, in 2017, underwent partial restoration by Peter Holzner, with the total cost amounting to approximately $23,200 USD.

Remarkably, the GT2 R is available in an unassembled state, without a chassis number or engine that matches it. This presents an intriguing opportunity for historic racing enthusiasts, as with suitable skills, it can be restored to its original specifications and certified for races such as Masters Endurance Legends and Peter Auto’s Endurance Racing Legends. The vehicle includes a Wagenpass, an inspection by Andy Prill, spare BBS wheels, and a multitude of components.

This rare GT2 R is set to be auctioned off on May 22 as part of RM Sotheby’s upcoming Milan Sale.
