Fans are getting a rare look at a fully colored artwork by Akira Toriyama, and it’s likely the first time many have ever seen it this way.
A 33-year-old drawing of Goku recently appeared on the official Dragon Ball website’s Toriyama Archives. It was originally created as the logo for a research project about the series’ creator, Akira Toriyama. Although the image was only available on the site for 24 hours, you can view it below.
Shonen Jump’s Akira Toriyama Mechanko Project Resurfaces With New Dragon Ball Draft
This artwork is a logo for the Akira Toriyama Mechanko Project, a ten-week series that highlighted the work of Akira Toriyama, including Dragon Ball. While the series was usually in black and white, this rare draft is shown in color. The image features a young Goku in a dynamic pose, making this piece especially exciting.
Goku is the main character and the most important part of the entire Dragon Ball series. He’s evolved over time from a surprisingly strong, innocent child into a hugely popular and incredibly powerful hero, constantly facing new challenges.
At the Dragon Ball Genkidamatsuri event in January, fans got their first look at the next Dragon Ball project after Dragon Ball Super. The event revealed key art for Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol, showing Goku and Vegeta in their familiar outfits but with Galactic Patrol emblems.
A remastered and partially remade version of the original Dragon Ball Super anime, titled Dragon Ball Super: Beerus, is coming out later this year. While many fans initially disliked the idea, early looks at the project have been widely praised as a significant improvement over the original series.
I was at Genkidamatsuri and there were a lot of exciting announcements, but it’s hard to ignore the serious legal issues the franchise is facing right now. The biggest one involves a dispute over who actually owns the rights, and it’s centered around Akio Iyoku, who worked closely with the original creator, Akira Toriyama, for many years.
In 2023, Iyoku left Shueisha and started Capsule Corporation Japan. Soon after Akira Toriyama’s death in 2024, a legal dispute began regarding the rights to the Dragon Ball anime. Currently, both companies involved share rights to different parts of the franchise, and the courts are only beginning to review the details of the case.
