Rare 1988 Porsche 959 Sport Heads to Auction via RM Sotheby’s

The iconic 1988 Porsche 959 Sport is set to be sold at an auction by RM Sotheby’s. Out of the total 29 Sport models ever manufactured, this particular one, painted Grand Prix White with Grey cloth interior, offers a unique chance for collectors. With just 3,757 miles on it, this vehicle remains in pristine condition.

In its time, the Porsche 959 stood out as a technological wonder, boasting innovative features such as adjustable suspension, a smart all-wheel-drive system, and light magnesium wheels. The regular 959 Komfort was an exquisite street-legal supercar, but the Sport variant raised the bar even higher. By eliminating adaptive suspension, air conditioning, and the sound system, it managed to lose approximately 220 pounds. In its place, it featured a robust roll cage and four-point safety harnesses. This transformation gave the vehicle a more agile, track-oriented character.

Originally bought by Werner Funk, a past Porsche factory racing team crew chief, in 1989, this specific 959 Sport initially remained in Europe due to import restrictions. Later on, it spent the majority of its existence in Switzerland and Italy, where it underwent careful upkeep. Eventually, it was brought to the United States after receiving thorough maintenance.

On February 28, the uncommon 1959 Sport will go under the hammer at RM Sotheby’s forthcoming Miami Auction, with an expected selling price of up to $6,500,000 USD.
