Rapper Saafir cause of death REVEALED one month after shock passing at age 54
As a devoted fan of Saafir, it’s incredibly heartbreaking to learn about his untimely demise. His journey was one filled with resilience and determination, from his debut in 1993 to his memorable role in Menace II Society alongside Jada Pinkett Smith. I remember the days when he danced for Digital Underground and lived with Tupac Shakur, setting him on a path to acting.
I can hardly believe it, but a month has passed since the untimely demise of my idol, Saafir, who left us on November 19 in his beloved Oakland, California. The cause behind this tragic loss has finally been disclosed, and it only deepens the sorrow that has gripped me as his fervent fan.
In a heartfelt social media post recently, my good friend and longtime collaborator, Xzibit, shared the unfortunate news about the passing of Saafir. According to him, this legendary figure in hip-hop transitioned around 8:45 in the morning, at the tender age of 54.
On Thursday, TMZ Hip Hop reported that Saafir’s death certificate indicated he passed away due to several underlying health issues.
According to the death certificate, the reason for passing away was septic shock, along with a condition called enterocolitis – an infection that can affect either the small intestine or the colon.
An additional cause was an infected sacral decubitus (bedsore) located towards his lower spine.
In the year 2005, I, too, found myself in a challenging situation similar to that of Saafir, whose real name was Reggie Gibson. I had to undergo surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from my spine, which unfortunately led to a significant loss of function in my legs and required me to use a wheelchair for mobility.
1993 marked the beginning of the rapper’s career, and he significantly impacted West Coast rap. However, he largely missed out on widespread commercial acclaim.
1993 saw him making his debut in acting, starring in the contemporary crime classic “Menace II Society.” This film also happened to be the first feature release for Jada Pinkett Smith.
In the years leading up to his passing, it’s said that Saafir endured multiple health issues and as a result, became reliant on a wheelchair for mobility.
Last month, Xzibit — who worked with the late star in the past — announced his passing in an emotional post.
At that point, he expressed disbelief by saying, “It’s hard to accept, but I’m not sure of any other options at the moment, so I’m writing this.
‘Approximately at 8:45am this morning, my brother Reggie known to the world as Saafir passed away.’
In a heartfelt manner, Xzibit expressed that the depth of our history left him speechless about his emotions at the moment. He recounted how we encircled him and communicated to him just how deeply we cherished him. Now, he can find peace knowing this.
Friends, relatives, everyone who’s been part of our Hip Hop journey, we kindly ask for your help. If you could extend support to @chopblack, his younger brother, and @lilsaafir, his son, during these challenging times, it would mean a lot to the family. Thank you in advance.
‘That’s all I have right now,’ the Pimp My Ride host shared. ‘My soul is crushed.’
He concluded by declaring ‘We love you Bro,’ and he hoped that his fallen friend — whom he referred to be his nickname ‘The Saucee Nomad’ would ‘REST IN POWER.’
The partnership between Saafir and Xzibit dates back to their time together in the hip-hop collective, originally known as the Golden State Warriors, where Ras Kass was also a part of the group.
Early in his career, Saafir worked as a dancer for the hip-hop crew Digital Underground.
At some stage, he resided with renowned rap artist Tupac Shakur. Shakur played a role in guiding him towards acting by presenting him to the movie-making pair, Albert and Allen Hughes. They then invited him to star in their first film, “Menace II Society.
During the early ’90s, Saafir was a member of the hip-hop collective known as Hobo Junction. He gained significant recognition within the genre following a highly publicized rap competition against the East Bay group, Hieroglyphics.
His triumphant performance earned him a recording contract from Quincy Jones, according to KQED.
As a devoted admirer, I followed in Jones’ footsteps – a jazz composer and band leader who later found fame as a renowned record producer and collaborator with Michael Jackson. In line with this connection, my album under the agreement, The Boxcar Sessions, blended the rhythms of West Coast hip-hop with the melodies of jazz.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but acknowledge that his output wasn’t overwhelming, and it seems that a series of back injuries throughout his career might have taken a toll on his creative energy.
On July 30, 1992, Saafir was among the travelers aboard TWA Flight 843 that experienced a forced landing following a failed takeoff attempt.
Even though everyone on board managed to escape unharmed, he sustained a back injury by leaping from the flaming plane onto the ground, as the emergency slide was yet to be deployed.
However, Saafir often linked his later troubles to a malignant growth in his spinal cord that was surgically taken out in 2005.
48 Hills interviewed him in 2013, and he stated that the operation was performed to preserve his life and avoid lifelong paralysis.
Despite managing to escape the fate of being a paraplegic, he did suffer a loss of mobility in his lower limbs. He attributed this immobilization to his health insurance, which he believed did not sufficiently cover the costs necessary for treatments aimed at helping him walk independently again.
Saafir is survived by his son, the rapper Lil Saafir, and a brother.
