Rapper Jay Rock arrested in L.A. on suspicion of illegal firearm possession
Last night, Grammy-winning hip-hop artist Jay Rock was taken into custody in the vicinity of the Watts housing development that he calls home, following accusations of unlawful gun ownership. According to officials, he is currently being held for questioning on these charges.
At 5:20 PM, the LAPD apprehended the 39-year-old rapper known as Johnny Reed McKinzie, based on information from a police representative, in the 13000 block of East 115th Street.
The representative stated that the individual had been taken into custody for allegedly breaking a California law that prevents people with previous felony convictions, outstanding felony warrants, or specific misdemeanor records from owning firearms. This offense can result in imprisonment of up to three years if found guilty.
Information on his next court appearance was not immediately available.
Initially, McKinzie was apprehended at the Nickerson Gardens public housing estate due to allegations of trespassing and consuming alcohol in public, as reported by NBC4’s sources. Upon attempting to flee from his car, a firearm was discovered within by the authorities, according to the news station.
In the viral video about the event posted online, the rapper is overheard commenting, “I wasn’t sure if you were aware of what I had been consuming.
In 2019, McKinzie bagged a Grammy for a remarkable rap performance in collaboration with Kendrick Lamar, Future, and James Blake on the song “King’s Dead.” This achievement was recognized in May of the same year when he was presented the key to his birthplace, Watts, by then-L.A. City Councilmember Joe Buscaino.
At the event, Buscaino proclaimed May 24 as “Jay Rock Day” and acknowledged that McKinzie has significantly contributed to the prosperity of upcoming generations through selfless acts, as reported by Power 106 radio station.
