Ranking the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation based on the amount of episodes they appeared in

As a die-hard Trekkie with over three decades of Starfleet service under my belt, I can confidently say that Star Trek: The Next Generation is more than just a TV show – it’s a way of life for many of us. The cast, much like the crew of the Enterprise, is a well-oiled machine, each character contributing their unique strengths to create an unforgettable experience.

As a diehard Star Trek fan, I’ve got to say that Star Trek: The Next Generation continues to be a standout in the Trek universe, even after four decades! Debuting in the 80s, this show has stood the test of time, remaining as relevant and captivating as ever. In fact, it’s not uncommon to hear fans hail TNG as the pinnacle of Star Trek, a series that truly set the bar high for all that followed.

If the show ranks as the best in its franchise, then it’s reasonable to assume that its cast is also exceptional, wouldn’t you agree? However, it’s a matter of perspective – some might see the series as outstanding, while others may appreciate the cast more. Nonetheless, this show has left an indelible mark on television history, and its influence on pop culture is undeniable by most standards.

Who among the Star Trek: The Next Generation cast members appeared in the most episodes? Let’s discover this, but remember a few points before we proceed. Firstly, IMDb ranks actors based on the number of episodes they are credited for, not necessarily the ones where they appear on screen. So, an actor could be officially credited for an episode, but might not actually show up in that particular episode.

In addition, resources such as Memory Alpha provide detailed information about a character’s appearances across various series. However, they only credit the top two characters with 176 episodes each instead of the total number of episodes in the series, which is 178. Therefore, be aware that we are using the count from Memory Alpha rather than IMDb for a more accurate understanding of how often each character appears throughout the entire series.

breakdown of the number count for each major character that has appeared in the franchise, as well as some frequently returning names.

  1. Jean-Luc Picard & William Riker (176)
  2. Data (175)
  3. Michael Dorn (174)
  4. Geordi LaForge (170)
  5. Deanna Troi (167)
  6. Beverly Crusher (153)
  7. Wesley Crusher (68)
  8. Miles O’Brien (52)
  9. Guinan (29)
  10. Natasha Yar (28)
  11. Kathrine Pulaski (20)

As a loyal Star Trek: The Next Generation fan, I can’t help but notice an interesting pattern in the screen time distribution of some key characters. Although Guinan is a beloved figure within the series, it seems that Natasha Yar appeared in more episodes than her. It’s unfortunate because Beverly Crusher, another fan favorite, was written off the show in season two. If she had been present in each episode that Katherine Pulaski graced with her presence, she would have clocked a total of 173 appearances, placing her fourth in the rankings.

Regardless of how you look at it, it seems clear that Picard and Riker were the most frequent characters in the series. It’s possible there was a misunderstanding regarding Memory Alpha’s count, or perhaps two episodes weren’t included in the series total, but either way, these two characters appeared in every episode (or close to it). We can’t be certain which episodes are excluded, but we do know that only Picard and Riker consistently had leading roles.
