Ranking all 3 of Tony Todd's characters from across his time on Star Trek

As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of immersion in the vast universe of Star Trek, I must say that Tony Todd’s performances across the franchise have been nothing short of captivating. His rich baritone voice and versatile acting chops have added depth to characters that might have otherwise been one-dimensional.

In simple terms, the entertainment industry suffered a significant loss with Tony Todd’s passing. Known for his long-standing career, he seemed to be everywhere, gaining prominence as the main character in the Candyman series. He also graced other projects such as Spider-Man 2 video game where he portrayed Venom, and popular TV shows like Psych. His voice, which was instantly recognizable, was a name that resonated with many.

He played significant voice roles in numerous productions, even lending his voice to Zoom in The Flash TV series. For fans of Star Trek, he is particularly recognized as one of the few actors who portrayed distinct characters on The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager.

He appeared in three different roles across the franchise, all uniquely different from one another. Highlighting the true depth of Todd’s talents. So today, we’re ranking each of his characters from across Star Trek.

3. Alpha Hirogen

In the fourth season episode of Voyager titled “Prey”, Todd appears for the third and final time in any Star Trek series, portraying the Alpha Hirogen. Throughout this episode, he plays a Hirogen soldier pursuing a Species-8472 member. The creature had the upper hand throughout the episode until a climactic one-on-one fight with the alien ensued. Unfortunately, Seven of Nine intervened by teleporting both combatants off Voyager before a victor could be determined. Todd delivered an impactful performance in this role, imbuing his character with weight even though it was not a particularly unique portrayal for a Hirogen alien. Typically, these aliens tended to act similarly to one another during their appearances.

2. Older Jake Sisko

In the “The Visitor” episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Todd portrays an older Jake Sisko. In the fourth season’s storyline, young Jake endures long periods of time as his father, Captain Benjamin Sisko, experiences brief moments between space jumps. For Jake, these waits span years or even decades, but for his father, they are mere instances. This heart-wrenching scenario requires Todd to convey a broad spectrum of emotions during his interactions with Avery Brooks’ Ben Sisko. If Todd had continued in this role, his portrayal of older Jake Sisko would likely have ranked higher among fans.

1, Kurn

While his turn as Jake Sisko may have given him his single best episode in Star Trek, his run as Kurn was arguably his most notable. The brother of Worf, Kurn is a loyal member of the Klingon Empire and is often at times at odds with his brother. As Kurn, he appeared in four episodes across two shows and became a likable C-character whenever he popped up.
