Ralf Little lands lead role as “disillusioned British intelligence officer” in hit spy story

While Ralf Little is famous for playing a detective solving crimes in the Caribbean, his next project will be quite different. He’s swapping the warm weather of Saint Marie for a location in Europe.

After recently finishing his role as DI Neville Parker on Death in Paradise, actor Little is now set to play Alec Leamas in a stage version of John le Carré’s famous 1963 novel, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold.

The story centers on Alec, a British intelligence officer who’s become cynical, during the Cold War. He’s sent on a risky mission to go undercover within a unit in East Germany, only to find the assignment is far more complex than he initially thought.

Actor Neil Little, known for his role in The Royle Family, expressed his excitement about playing Alec Leamas in the stage adaptation of John le Carré’s classic Cold War story. He called it an honor to portray such a well-known character and bring the novel’s complex world to the stage.

He said he first read The Spy Who Came In from the Cold at age 16 and it’s remained a powerful book for him ever since. He particularly remembered its surprising plot twists and the intense rivalry between the East and West during the Cold War.

The actor said the story, though written in the 1960s, still feels incredibly current and meaningful today. They’re excited to share it with both longtime fans and new audiences as they tour the UK.

Written by David Eldridge and directed by Jeremy Herrin, the play will premiere at the Curve Theatre in Leicester on March 12th. It will then tour to cities including Edinburgh and Sheffield, with a final performance at the Bath Theatre Royal on August 22nd.

The novel was previously turned into a film in 1965, with Richard Burton winning a BAFTA for his performance as Alec. A new series, Legacy of Spies, featuring Matthew Macfadyen and Charlie Hunnam, is also planned as an adaptation.

The Spy Who Came In from the Cold begins on 12 March at Leicester’s Curve Theatre.
