Raid 3 CONFIRMED?! Director Speaks Out After 11 Years!

Director Gareth Evans provides an update on the potential continuation of “The Raid” series, addressing whether “The Raid 3” will indeed be made. Released in 2011, “The Raid” introduced Evans as a prominent action director and propelled star Iko Uwais into the limelight as an action movie hero. The film centers around a S.W.A.T. team that finds themselves stuck in a building teeming with criminals. A sequel in 2014 was well-received, but as of now, “The Raid 3” remains unrealized, with both Evans and Uwais focusing their efforts on separate projects.

In a recent conversation with EW, Evans offers an encouraging snippet about The Raid 3. Although he underlines that nothing is definitive and his initial concept for the third film no longer applies, the project remains very much alive and under consideration. Here’s what Evans had to say on the matter:

My response to your question is somewhat vague since I can only commit if it becomes feasible. Originally, I had an idea for a sequel right after the end of “The Raid 2,” but due to other projects and the passage of time, I’m no longer able to make that specific version of the film.

Instead of directly stating I won’t do another installment of “The Raid 2”, I had thought to myself, ‘I’m content with how things ended in The Raid 2, so I don’t foresee making a third part.’ Consequently, I set the idea aside.

Following the abandonment of his initial concept for The Raid 3, Evans disclosed that he recently visited Indonesia two years back, reuniting with Uwais following a long separation. This reunion sparked fresh thoughts about what a potential third film could be like.

It had been around seven years since I last encountered Iko, marking our longest separation yet. Despite regular communication through WhatsApp, this meeting was our first in a long while. Over the years, I’ve viewed Iko as my younger sibling due to our unique history and shared projects. Upon reconnecting after such a long gap, I was taken aback by how much he had grown, evolved, and accumulated various life experiences.

After contemplating on it, I have a fresh perspective about what The Raid 3 could potentially become. Therefore, I haven’t completely ruled it out, and it might be worth discussing again in the future. If I were to pursue such a project, I would ensure that the outcome aligns with the ideal vision for this movie.

Evans expresses caution, stating that he would require absolute confidence in his ability to meet the high standards established by the initial two movies before proceeding with the project. He acknowledges being profoundly grateful for the wonderful, encouraging fanbase that has emerged as a result of those films. He further explains that he wants to ensure the project is something worthy of their expectations regarding what it could become.

The First Two Raid Movies Set A High Bar

Both “The Raid” and its subsequent installment are generally regarded as exceptional modern action films, with the original presenting a tense, confined battle for survival, while the sequel expands Rama’s story into a more expansive crime tale. The first movie boasts an 87% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and its sequel follows closely at 83%. The audience-favorite Popcornmeter scores both films at 87%, indicating the overwhelmingly positive response towards Rama’s narrative.

Since The Raid 2, Evans has stayed active, directing the 2018 Netflix film The Apostle and serving as executive producer for the popular Gangs of London TV series, in addition to handling several episodes. His latest release is Havoc, starring Tom Hardy, but this movie, which was eagerly awaited as Evans’ comeback to action films, has received mixed reviews with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 65% from critics and 39% from audiences. Therefore, The Raid 3 offers an opportunity for Evans to reclaim his status as a top action director.

Evans’s Raid Return Would Be Welcome After Havoc

Critics find fault not only with the narrative and characters in the latest movie, but also with its action sequences. In contrast, the Raid films garnered acclaim for their intense and grueling hand-to-hand combat scenes. If Evans were to adopt a similar approach to Havoc for The Raid 3, the sequel might spark controversy.
