Radio star Robin Bailey makes raw confession about affair before late husband’s death

Radio personality Robin Bailey has publicly shared a difficult part of her past, admitting to an affair before her husband’s death. She now acknowledges that this decision had devastating effects on her family.

KIIS FM Brisbane’s 57-year-old host is sharing a very personal story from the end of her first marriage in her upcoming memoir, Flamingoes Aren’t Born Pink. She’s described the book as a candid look at the decisions she made during that difficult time.

In 2014, Bailey experienced the loss of her husband, Tony Smart, to suicide after a long struggle with depression. They had been married for 15 years. Bailey was 57 years old at the time.

In an interview with QWeekend, Bailey shared that the affair happened during a separation, even though she and the other person were still sharing a home. She described it as a difficult time and said she wasn’t attempting to excuse what happened.

‘I’m not making excuses, I’m just explaining… I think everyone should question what their own moral compass is on that,’ she began.

Infidelity is common, and while my situation had a specific outcome, the core emotions – the hurt of betrayal and the sting of anger – are universal.

Honestly, messing up like I did… it completely wrecked things for me. I’m bracing myself for the backlash, I know people are going to look at me so differently now, and they have every right to feel that way. But I have to keep reminding myself – and them – that what I did, however wrong, was the honest truth.

The experienced broadcaster didn’t plan to share these very personal details at first, but she felt she needed to write about them to understand and come to terms with what she’d gone through.

‘I needed to not blame anyone else, to take my responsibility in it,’ she said.

The most difficult part was being completely honest with myself – acknowledging my role and owning my decisions, because everyone is complex. We all have the capacity for both good and bad, and we all make both great and terrible choices.

‘And my choice had a diabolical consequence for the most important people in my life.’

Bailey, already grieving the loss of her husband, experienced another tragedy years later with the passing of her three sons: Fin, Lewin, and Piper.

She married radio executive Sean Pickwell in 2018, calling him her soulmate. Sadly, he passed away from cancer just eleven months later.

He proposed days after he learned his liver cancer had spread to his bones, blood and other organs.

He passed away on the morning of September 26, 2019, at his home in Brisbane, with his wife by his side. He was 56 years old.

It absolutely broke my heart when Bailey shared the news – she simply wrote, ‘My big, beautiful panda is gone,’ and it said everything. It was such a devastating loss.

‘He died as he lived, his way, at home with us holding him early this morning.

I can’t fully express how much love and gratitude I have for my husband, Sean. He brought so much healing into our lives, loved me unconditionally, and taught me invaluable lessons. Because of him, we’ll face whatever comes our way with greater strength, wisdom, and resilience.

“He was my soulmate, truly the love of my life,” Bailey shared. “No matter what happens now, I’ll always carry him in my heart and feel like he’s supporting me.”

Bailey’s upcoming memoir, Flamingoes Aren’t Born Pink, will be released on Tuesday, March 31.
