Radio star details “extraordinarily difficult” impact of life decision: “I do feel a bit guilty”

Television and radio host Penny Smith openly discussed the extremely challenging consequences of a significant life choice she made, admitting that she struggled with feelings of guilt.

In a conversation with Siobhan Wykes on the Suddenly Single podcast, Smith, who previously worked for BBC Radio London and Sky News, shared her choice – a decision made during her twenties – to forego having children.

The presenter stated, “I was clear I didn’t want kids when I was in my twenties. Back then, expressing such a sentiment seemed like an act of cruelty towards puppies. It was incredibly challenging to navigate those times.

As I delve deeper into understanding myself, I’ve come to realize that we often find ourselves conforming to societal expectations, a fact that sometimes leaves me feeling a pang of guilt about my personal beliefs and stances.

In the ’80s, Smith was wedded for three years, but for the last 24 years, this individual has been in a relationship. However, it’s worth noting that despite living separately, they have chosen to do so comfortably, as disclosed by the presenter.

Smith expressed contentment in his solitude, mentioning that he has numerous pastimes which keep him occupied – a fact his mother had foreseen long ago. He often finds himself engrossed in organizing and cleaning various areas, reflecting his meticulous nature.

She added, “I’ve always found solace in my own presence since there’s usually something I desire to accomplish or tasks that require attention.” She’s quite at ease venturing solo. She plans to purchase a single ticket for the theater!

Although she was quite content with solitude, Smith articulated her views on the concept of ‘The One’ and romantic expressions, stating, “I believe that there are numerous ‘Ones’. I have fallen in love more than once – indeed, I have been in love several times.

As a romantic at heart, I’d say this: “If the sweet gesture was waking up to breakfast in bed with a rose between its petals, but I knew I was about to head downstairs and the kitchen was a disaster zone, that to me feels more like a battlefield than romance.” A more enchanting scenario would be setting out for a lovely breakfast together if they aren’t exactly domestic goddesses or gods in the kitchen.
